The koala, the symbol of a nation and one of the most popular animal in the world, is in crisis. Before Europeans colonize Australia, over two centuries ago, there were approximately ten million koalas living in the eucalypt forest on the east coast, a strip of land 2,500 km long. Then, by dint of being hunted for its beautiful fur, threatened by collapse in the southern half of their range and in Queensland (the northern half), in 1919 he was killed a million. Eight years later, at the end of last season hunting allowed in that region, the survivors were a few tens of thousands.
