Thankyou Shelter, this is exactly my kind film, no computer effects, no slomo car crashes, no hysteria as a substitute for acting. I'm sounding like an old man saying this. Not all recent movies are trash but there are plenty that are. It is humbling to see in these films just how brave men were then when everything counted on them. This classic and all the rest like it remind us why we should never forget how hideous it is to be in a war.
Thank you Dargelos for your words. I'll be with 100% with you. And it is totally correct that the "old" movies sometimes are better
than the movies from today. And most of all, the "old" war movies are mostly better than the "modern" ones. And why you should sound like an "old man" because you love them as well?

AFTERMATH (2024)

A returning war veteran, stricken with PTSD, unwittingly gets trapped with his teenage sister on Boston's Tobin Memorial Bridge as a heavily weaponized group of ex-military revolutionists take everyone hostage. Imdb

If you've read the synopsis above and are thinking " Sounds a bit crap" you would be correct - the plot is rubbish, but so is the acting; script; CGI & soundtrack.

A REAL PAIN (2024)

"A Real Pain" follows mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) as they reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother, but their adventure takes a dark turn when the odd couple's old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. (IMdB)

Hmmm 7,1 points on IMdB! Zero points from myself.
Drama: :D
Comedy:
In my opinion, a film without a real story! Kieran Culkin obtrusively loud and (sorry) idiotic! A lost film evening! And yes, I forgot to say: this film was for me "A Real Pain"!

About the writer Hunter S Thompson, famous for being a user of every drug known to mankind. It's a one joke movie, if you like that one joke then good but I lost interest half way through which I normaly never do. I suppose you need to be stoned to enjoy this, sadly I was sober.

DARK CITY (1998)

John Murdoch awakens alone in a strange hotel to find that he has lost his memory and is wanted for a series of brutal and bizarre murders. While trying to piece together his past, he stumbles upon a fiendish underworld controlled by a group known as The Strangers who possess the ability to put people to sleep and alter the city and its inhabitants. Now Murdoch must find a way to stop them before they take control of his mind and destroy him. Imdb

WOW! I don't know how this passed me by but I saw it referred to in a review of another movie and tracked it down. A neo-noir cult classic? Maybe... think Brazil meets Matrix meet Inception (although it pre-dates the last two) The cinematography is great as are the special effects particularly as it is a 1998 movie. The plot is totaly wacko with several WTF? moments ..... I loved it.

Stella cast including Rufus Sewell; Kiefer Sutherland; Jennifer Connely; William Hurt; Richard O'Brien; Melissa George & Ian Richardson.

Reading about the movie this morning it seems there are 2 versions - the directors cut (the one I happened to find) and the original release which has a narration at the beginning giving too much of the crazy plot away so if are interested grab the directors cut which at 1hr 52 mins is 11 mins longer than the original cinema release.

DEN OF THIEVES 2 - PANTERA (2024)

Big Nick is back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie, who is embroiled in the treacherous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world's largest diamond exchange. Imdb

It's one of those "dumb but fun" movies but for a Gerard Butler movies there's not enough fun. This sequel runs in at 2hrs 24mins, I might have enjoyed it more if it been about an hour shorter.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971)

William Friedkin's gritty police drama portrays two tough New York City cops trying to intercept a huge heroin shipment coming from France. An interesting contrast is established between 'Popeye' Doyle, a short-tempered alcoholic bigot who is nevertheless a hard-working and dedicated police officer, and his nemesis Alain Charnier, a suave and urbane gentleman who is nevertheless a criminal and one of the largest drug suppliers of pure heroin to North America. During the surveillance and eventual bust, Friedkin provides one of the most gripping and memorable car chase sequences ever filmed. (IMdB)

Again, an old classic. I haven't watched this film before, always thought it isn't worth because it is too old. But now after the death of Gene Hackman, which was one of my most beloved actors, I wanted to watch it. Well it was again a movie without any CGI and that was good because it looked honest! I've laughed when I've seen all these giant cars on the streets. How could they ever find a parking place? Nevertheless, it was an interesting movie evening. I cannot say that I will recommend this film to all of you. All I can say is, it was not a lost time, and today we want to watch THE FRENCH CONNECTION 2 from 1975. These films have been a view back into our past where nasty people got their sentence!

THE FRENCH CONNECTION 2 (1975)

New York narcotics detective Popeye Doyle follows the trail of the French connection smuggling ring to France where he teams up with the gendarmes to hunt down the ringleader. (IMdB)

And just the second part. And in my opinion, this one has been the better one. There was real suspense and action as we know it from such movies from today. This part I'll really recommend - but for the clearer understanding you MUST watch the first too.

I only watched this coz it has a small part by Hattie Jacques, I watch anything if she is in it. The stars are Peter Sellers and Ringo from The Beatles, who, as actors go, is a great drummer. This sort of clumsy satire was a warm up for Monty Python's Flying Circus, so it is interesting to see how that comedy style was born, but as a movie in it's own right, too purile to reccomend.

hystery... There was an urban myth that John Lennon said about Ringo - "He's not the best drummer in the world. in fact he's not even the best drummer in the Beatles". He never actually said it and if you want examples of how good he was listen to the Abbey Road album.....

Kieran Culkin has won the best supporting actor Oscar in Hollywood for his work in A Real Pain.

To be fair, He is “A Real Pain”. 😋

THE GREAT WALL (2016)

In ancient China, a group of European mercenaries encounters a secret army that maintains and defends the Great Wall of China against a horde of monstrous creatures. Imdb

This popped up on the All4 free streaming service in the UK. Initially I wasn't going to watch - then I saw it was directed by Yimou Zhang, who directed the excellent SHADOW; HOUSE OF FLYING TIGERS and the truely magnificent HERO. Matt Damon and Willaim Defoe are the "western" stars but they both look out of place. It looks great with some well filmed action sequences which is just as well as the dialogue is pretty corny, and it has an odd plot premise - when I walked a section of the wall a few years back none of the guides mentioned anything about it being built to protect against attacks from alien monsters from outer space!

A COMPLETE UNKNOWN (2024)

In 1961, an unknown 19-year-old Bob Dylan arrives in New York City with his guitar and forges relationships with musical icons on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking performance that reverberates around the world. Imdb

I'm not the worlds biggest Dylan fan - or bio pics but I really enjoyed this. The cast is great, Timotee Shampoo is a very convincing Dylan and apparently spent over a year learning to play the guitar and he does sound like the man himself. The 2hrs 20min just zips along.

I'M STILL HERE a.k.a Ainda Estou Aqu (2024) .... no trailer due to actor ages

A mother is forced to reinvent herself when her family's life is shattered by an act of arbitrary violence during the tightening grip of a military dictatorship in Brazil, 1971. Imdb

This Brazilian movie won the Oscar for Best International Film and lead actress Fernanda Torress won much acclaim, and a Golden Globe, for her performance and I can see why. It is a heartwrenching and moving story set against a dark time in Brazils history. A gripping watch.

BEASTS OF NO NATION (2015) .... no trailer due to actor ages

A drama based on the experiences of Agu, a child soldier fighting in the civil war of an unnamed African country. Imdb

I happened upon this as it was on one of those review videos "best hidden gems on Netflix" and was glad I did. As you will guess from the synopsis above it is not an easy watch - harrowing, visceral, powerful but due to the atmospheric soundtrack & cinematography and close-up camera work it's also beautiful. A stark contrast between the opening showing a happy family life with kids goofing around with some very funny scenes before things take a dark turn. Some great performances, particularly from Abraham Attah as Agu. Recommended

Saltburn. I know I'm really late, but I finally got around to watching it and did not expect that twist at the end. Very good movie, but I've had the song Murder On The Dancefloor stuck in my head ever since. 😅
