No, God is a creation of man. When he first evolved Man lived in a very threatening world, one way to keep it managable was to create a god and his rules, if you followed them you'd be ok. Now that we better understand the world we don't need to be fearful and God is less important. Nietzsche said it best, God is dead, of course, so is Nietzsche.

But; religion is perfectly fine in private between consenting adults, not when it's rammed down the throats of innocent children. Individual faith good, teaching it in schools as fact bad. Not just bad, evil.
