After a week of problems, I finally did the HOSTS file edits. It works fine in Linux and Windows. I find it odd that neither the numbers or text work in the address bar but using them in the hosts file does work.

Something is definitely wrong; DNS problems usually don't last more than 36 hours.

Since almost all servers use name-based virtual hosting these days, that is totally normal. The IP address for gay heaven has loads of sites on it - the only way the server can know what site to give you is by readying your address bar (done through HTTP headers). If that just says the IP address then the server can't respond meaningfully, so you get an error.

By doing the hosts file fix, you get to use the right name in the address bar, so the server can do it's thing.

Something is definitely wrong; DNS problems usually don't last more than 36 hours.

No - it won't take more than 36 hours for the fix to propagate normally, but as long as the DNS server is having problems, problems will persist.

maybe its one of the signs that this forum might go down sometime... blocking is inevitable to these kinds of sharesites.. sadly... producers are getting mad...

I really don't think it is. Perhaps there are some parts of the world where corporate rights trump freedom of expression, but that's not universal. The long list of banned sites shows that this site responds when studios come calling, so they would have no legal case to take the site down.

"we move that this site which complied with our request to stop sharing our stuff be blocked for sharing our stuff" - doesn't work!

Hmm I don't think it is a problem with the nameservers because planetsuzy works fine. I do think its a prob with where GH is hosted communicating to the nameserver...

Just my 2 cents... ;)

There is actually no communication needed between the GH web server and the DNS server that hosts the GH DNS zone.

If I were to meet symptoms like these in work I'd deduce that the name server is having some form of on-going problem. Perhaps it's being overloaded, perhaps it's being hit by a denial of service attack, or perhaps it's having some form of OS or hardware problem. But for what ever reason, the authoritative DNS server for GH is failing to answer DNS queries some of the time.

Because of how DNS works, even if it was only failing 1 out of 10o times, that would have a significant effect on a lot of people. DNS servers cache answers, including 'does not exist' answers, so when a failure gets cached on a resolving name server, everyone using that server as their DNS server will keep getting that failure until the cache expires and the resolver tries to contact the GH authoritative server again. Big ISPs tend to have long caches to reduce the load on their servers, so a really short outage at the source can translate to a really long outage for users.

Ah my bad, I was thinking of name registration. But as I've said, planetsuzy is on the same name server as GH and they don't have any problems. So I'm thinking the web server itself might be the problem - possibly someone ddosing GH...

Help!

I'm in the UK, and today whenever I try to visit Gayheaven I get redirected to my isp's (Virgin) search page which is telling me that www.gayheaven.org doesn't exist. Does this mean that Virgin is blocking me from this website? I'm reluctant to phone and ask them, because it means having to discuss this website, which I don't want to do given the nature of Gayheaven.

I managed to slip through using a proxy server, but unfortunately I'm not able to download anything with a proxy server. So basically, I'm fucked!

Has this happened to anyone else? What is the best way around it -- other than changing my isp?

Any input would be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem but it changes daily 1 day i can get on here like today but then other day i get this virgin media say it don't exist page :butslap:

That is indeed very odd. They definitely are using the same authoritative name servers.

gayheaven.org. 3388	IN	NS	ns1.dnswin.com.[/B]

Every error message I've seen throughout this issue has been an error in name resolution, so all lines of evidence still point to DNS.

Those public-facing IPs in the NS records could be in some way load-balanced onto many servers behind the scenes, so although both domains use the same public IP, they could still be on different servers.

People forget that the mapping between machines and IP addresses is very indirect these days. It used to be so much simpler, one server, one IP, one DNS name, but that's been blown out of the water by NAT and round robin DNS and named virtual hosting and a raft of other technologies.

Bottom line - since I added an entry for gayheaven.org to the hosts file on my router, I've had no more problems.

I just noticed something - the results are NOT the same for planetsuzy and gayheaven, the order of the name servers is reversed, so we're on NS3 primarily, while they are on NS1 primarily. If it's NS3 that's having problems it would affect GH most than planetsuzy.

Didn't read through all 11 pages, but fixed my problem by changing my DNS servers to Open DNS. My ISP was using Google's DNS servers.

Hay Guys,

GH have moved providers so if you are reading this message all is OK.

If you know anyone who has amending their HOSTS file to force GayHeaven.org to 80.179.154.41 that needs to be REMOVED now as GH is no longer hosted there. Their new IP address is 89.238.166.181.

Dont put this in your HOSTS file as there is no point as DNS resolves this now :)

Now Click Replace and It will ask you for your Login Details which you use when you start up your Mac and Once you placed your Login Details Click OK and the File "Host" that was on your Desktop will be moved straight back into that folder with the new settings and then it should work after a few times refreshing the page.

Try switching your DNS service to fix

I've been having the same issues getting access for the past few days but I already use OpenDNS and figured they were the problem. I removed the OpenDNS settings and defaulted back to my ISP's own service and got straight back into gayheaven.org again.

Suggest anyone struggling to get access tries the same thing, switch your DNS settings to another free service and see if that corrects the issue, there should be no need to edit Hosts files.

EDIT: I should have also said once you've regained access to gayheaven you can switch your DNS settings back to what they were, the problem will hopefully now be fixed - at least until the next time...

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this thread. :)

I just want to add that if possible maybe the admins could change the posting on the 80.179.154.41 IP address (where is say "we are changing servers...") to include the information that the site is now up and anyone who edited their HOSTS file should delete the added lines.

It might not be possible but it took me a day or two to decide to delete the two lines, perhaps others are in the same situation.
