In 1999, Franjo Tudjman, president and founding father of the independent nation of Croatia, died in a hospital in the Croatian capital of Zagreb. He was 77. Tudjman was one of the last of a generation of eastern European political leaders who fought against Nazi Germany in World War II. In June 1997, he won election to his third term as president of the Republic of Croatia. He will be remembered for keeping his promise to lead Croatia to independence from Yugoslavia. But he also was a crafty practitioner of old-fashioned authoritarianism in post-communist eastern Europe.
There is not a lot of trustworthy information about Tudjman's early life, which was probably that of a poor village lad. His writings, and articles about him in crony newspapers, provide only a mirror that flattered him. He liked to dress up in a white uniform ornamented with gold braid and medals he had awarded himself. He sought to copy the style of his old boss Tito, living in Tito's former house in Zagreb and his holiday home on Brioni island.
I'm not an Obama-friend (he has disappointing me and so many others so much!) but this move to Cuba was a good and brave step after more than 50 years of "enmity". I only hope the Republicans will not kill this tender plant.
In 1959, Florence Griffith Joyner, American sprinter who set world records in the 100 metres (10.49 seconds) and 200 metres (21.34 seconds) that have stood since 1988, was born in Los Angeles. Olympic winner and known for her long, painted nails and dramatic running clothes, Florence was one of the world's greatest athletes. Her 1998 death was a shocker.
In 1954, Denzel Washington, an American actor, film director, and film producer, was born in Mount Vernon, at the north end of the Bronx in New York City. He has received two Golden Globe awards, a Tony Award, and two Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor for Glory (1989) and Best Actor for Training Day (2001).
Before the Oscars of 2002, Julia Roberts stood firmly in his corner, saying "I cannot absorb living in a world where I have an Oscar for Best Actress and Denzel doesn't have one for Best Actor". :agree:
In 1982, Kate Middleton was born in Reading, Berkshire, England, to pilot Michael and flight attendant Carole Middleton. On April 29, 2011, she married Prince William at Westminster Abbey in London. Shortly before their wedding, Queen Elizabeth conferred Kate with the title of Catherine, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge. After the palace officially announced her pregnancy in December 2012, Middleton gave birth to a baby boy on July 22, 2013, amid an international media frenzy.
In 1944, Jean Daniel C4dinot, the master of erotic photography and film was born in Paris, at the foot of Montmartre hill in the Batignoles Quarter. He made more than 60 gay porno movies (Tough & Tender, Pension complete, etc.).
In 1957 Johann Hölzel (better known by his stage name Falco), an Austrian musician, was born in Vienna. Falco had several international hits: Rock Me Amadeus, Der Kommissar, Vienna Calling, Jeanny, etc. During his life about 60 million sound carriers have been sold. Influenced by the movie “Amadeus” and new biographies of Mozart, the song “Rock Me Amadeus” developed, Falco’s biggest hit. This was the first and only song with German lyrics that made it to the top of the US-Billboard-Charts. He died on February 6th 1998 in a car accident in the Dominican Republic.
