We've heard here in France that the reason why Obama did not come to Paris was because the US security thought that the organisation of this march was not secure for him !

I saw just how spectacularly disruptive US security is when Obama came to Ireland. Random people do not get close to him, and what is a march but MANY random people?

He is not allowed to be directly in the line of sight of un-vetted people (without bullet proof glass between).

Everyone in Ireland saw this when his limo got stuck leaving the American embassy in Dublin. He had to stay in the limo until a vehicle could be found to block him from the view of the crowds on the street. If an random person on the street could get a direct shot, that is seen as a problem.

Now - imagine all those windows on the Parisian streets, all those unvetted people.

On the one hand, maybe European politicians are braver, on the other hand, maybe they are more foolish! It's not that long since Regan was shot, so I can see why his security team could be a little paranoid!

Also - for his visit to Ireland his security team arrived 2 weeks in advance. Two weeks ago, most Americans had never heard of Charlie H!

Thinking about it more, I doubt the French would have wanted the big security operation to cater for Obama, and I bet his security team advised him against going.

I guess it's just not practical for the US president to walk the streets with ordinary people at short notice in a foreign country. A sign of the times :(

B.

I suppose there would be the same Secret Service requirements for ex-Presidents Bush, Clinton and Carter. The Pope's funeral was not postponed 2 weeks to oblige the SS troops to secure the public areas but then again that funeral was not 5 days after a horrific terror attack on the Vatican such as the situation in Paris.

Still... the USA needed to have a higher profile figure in the unity march.

Thanks for the info klimt and gb.

Do we really care if this or that famous face is here or there or someplace else? The purpose of the event was not to provide photo ops for the celebs, even if Mr S thought it was. It was about the people who couldnt be there who we wish still were here.

Tell me sniffit, was it really possible they would have let GWB come over for this? The thought of that has me stunned. With his previous.

Well, no, I suppose 'W' would not have been welcome, lol.

But surely Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton would have been welcome. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Look, when all the dust settles the fact that America is an ally of France and the rest of Europe is still a fact. Does America have a track record? Yes. Everyone knows that. But France and the rest of Europe has a track record as well. But like old friends who bicker and fight when push comes to shove America will be there for it's old friends. I just think we should have shown our connection to France and Europe with more of a presence. That's all. In the end what really matters is America will be there when the bullet hits the bone.

America will only be there if it is in our interests. We no longer respond properly to any threat so of course terrorists have become much bolder.

The notion of "terrorists have become much bolder " is worth exploring; when killers intend to kill themseves rather than be taken alive, how much bolder can you get than that?. Then what sort of deterrent is there for someone who is going to die anyway. Only if you can guarantee that they wont die in the aftermath of their crime can you threaten them with any sort of punishment. It's hard to see how that could work. Suggestions please.

Bill and Jimmy would have been very welcome, they may be better liked here than in their home country. Neither of them started a catastrophic war the fallout from which we are still dealing with today. Unlike another ex president, ably abetted by an ex uk primeminister.

Please realize our OWN security for our President sucks balls....a couple months ago some douchebag vaulted the fence in Washington and actually GOT INSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE before they nabbed him...this caused a HUGE shakeup where 4 or 5 assistant directors of the Secret Service were recently fired.

We can apparently BARELY protect our own President and his family in their home never mind anything else....our fault and OUR EMBARRESMENT on the worldwide stage again Klimt:blushing:

THAT BEING SAID - I wish President Obama would have had the balls to say - no I WILL MARCH in solidarity with our allies but he did not...disappointing to many of us here.

sigh

Come on guys, you gotta admit that Fox News is pretty great. Where else are we going to find our source for comedy on current events? :p

Fox News is not to be taken seriously and most Americans know that but there is a minority who are devout believers. That's why Fox News is so dangerous. Propaganda is everywhere.

I've stopped listening or watching American news media completely unless a tragedy happens such as the Paris tragedy. Then I watch a variety of news outlets to try and pick out some nuggets of truth if I can find them.

I read a lot more than watch or listen. I find it easier to pick the pieces apart if I can read and re-read an article.

I also depend on my overseas friends for information ;)

The worst after effect of all this is not Nico's ego or Fox's lies. It's the way the security services are exploiting the political mood in order to demand even less democratic oversight on how far they can go to spy on you and me. Like glaziers who smile when bricks get thrown, and umbrella sellers who cheer when it rains, bad news is always good news for somebody. They already had information on these terrorists, but did not make use of it. The next time a murderous outrage is being planned they won't notice because they are too busy looking through your porn downloads.
