CHAMPIONS (2023)

A former minor-league basketball coach receives a court order to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. Despite his doubts, he soon realizes that together they can go further than they ever imagined....

An absolute joy. If you have read the synopsis above you will be thinking "I already know how this will end", but just go with the flow on this one and have a blast - the end is not the thing, it's the journey to get here. It's laugh out loud funny; heartwarming & sentimental without being schmaltzy... a feelgood tour-de-force; enjoy!!!

Two films from South Korea:
1. KILL BOKSOON (2023) - this film is advertising to be the Korean equivalent to JOHN WICK 4. For this impertinent promotion the dull makers of this movie should be incarcerated for a very long time. It really is the most idiotic and most boring film I've ever seen. Hands off!!!!

2. FABRICATED CITY (2017)
After Kwon, an exceptional gamer, is wrongly framed for murder, he along with his allies decides to find the real culprit and prove his innocence. (IMdB)

This is one of the very best action films I've ever seen! Ingenious high-speed car pursuits! Overexcited action scenes! In one word:
amazing! If you want to enjoy yourself - sit down and watch it! Very recommended! (y)

THE MARTIAN (2015)

Matt Damon stars as Watney, an astronaut stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead. He must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue.

Apart from the potato growing I'd forgotten most of the plot. A tension filled 2hrs 21min

....................................

WARNING : This film does have to totally useless Sean Bean 🤢🤢 in it - but he's not on screen much and only has a few words to mumble in his usual wooden charisma free way

BIRDY (1984)

Philly boys Al and Birdy became friends in high school despite the extreme difference in their personalities, Al being the popular and athletic extrovert, Birdy the antisocial "weird" introvert. Al gave Birdy his nickname because of his fascination - obsession really - with birds, especially with flight. Al and Birdy have just completed their service of duty in the Vietnam War and have returned to the States. Al sustained some serious physical injuries, which required major reconstructive surgery to his face. Birdy, however, returned from Vietnam seemingly emotionally scarred. He was missing in action for one month. He has not spoken since he was found. Al travels to the institution where Birdy is being kept to see if he can assist in getting Birdy out of his near comatose state and the movie flips between the hospital to flashbacks of earlier years.

The 2 leads, Matthew Modine & Nicholas Cage give very strong performances in this haunting and in some ways astonishing movie. Alan Parker (Bugsy Malone; Midnight Express; Mississippi Burning) directs and Peter Gabriel supplies the atmospheric original soundtrack.

BEING JOHN MALKOVICH (1999)

In this original & innventive wacko comedy fantasy unemployed New York City puppeteer Craig Schwartz (John Cusack) reluctantly takes a temp job as a filing clerk. While at work, Craig discovers a portal that leads into the mind of renowned actor John Malkovich. The visit through the portal lasts fifteen minutes after which the person is spit into a ditch next to the New Jersey Turnpike. Written by Charlie Kaufmann and directed by Spike Jonze, also stars Cameron Diaz, Charlie Sheen ... and John Malkovic Very surreal, very funny

FISHERMAN'S FRIENDS - a wonderful dramedy from 2019 (England) which is based on true events.

A fast living, cynical London music executive (Daniel Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he's pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate "fish out of water" as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he's drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he's forced to reevaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means. (IMdB)

This is a wonderful feel good movie if perhaps you have enough from action, crime etc. Here you can laugh and you can cry and anything in between. It is not a MUST but believe me it is a SHOULD BE!!! You will not be disappointed!
ever watch the one made few years ago--people think its a remake but its not

MORBIUS (2022)

A Marvel movie (not a good one) about Dr Morbius who is dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate. He attempts a desperate and dangerous cure and while at first it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil, or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges? and will anybody care? Stars Jared Leto & Matt Smith. It's a bit of a mess with some low quality CGI and poor acting, paticularly from Matt Smith I thought. It flopped at the cineama, I'm not surprised. It could be worse - it could be Eternals!

Today an English movie from 2019: END OF SENTENCE

After being widowed, Frank Fogle reluctantly embarks on a journey to honor his wife's last wish of spreading her ashes in a remote lake in her native Ireland and a promise of taking his estranged son, Sean, along for the trip. As Sean steps out of prison the last thing on his mind is a foreign road trip with his alienated father. What he needs is a fresh start in California. But when his travel plans collapse he reluctantly accepts his father's proposal in return for a ticket to the West Coast and a promise that they never have to see each other again. Between a disconcerting Irish wake, the surfacing of an old flame, the pick up of a pretty hitchhiker and plenty of unresolved issues, the journey becomes a little more than father and son had bargained for. (IMdB)

For us a wonderful, amazing, a wicked and a tender film about a troubled relationship between father and son and how through a road trip slowly the disrupted ties between both men come together again. A film which will have to continue to have an effect on you. Summarized: Blood is thicker than water! I would, from deep of my heart, recommend this film to all of you!

LUTHER THE FALLEN SUN (2022)

What happens when n/flix chucks $$$$$ at a much loved BBC TV detective.... well OK they have a big budget and make it look great on the big screen but that's not enough. They forgot about the other stuff and you end up with this overblown silly plot with an awful script

(I'm not a fan of Andy Serkis and his over the top "acting" so that didn't help either)

RED (2010)

So having recently watch Being John Malkovich and then the 5th Element with Bruce Willis this Malkovich/Willis movie seemed a logical move. Pure escapist DC Comicbook fun - has Brian Cox and Helen Mirren too

It has been a fun evening - wasn't it? I liked this film from a time when Bruce was in the best of health!

FABRICATED CITY (2017)

A high octane action/thriller from Sth Korea. A video-game guru is arrested for a gruesome crime he didn't commit after he tries to return a lost cell phone. Soon, he and his fellow gamers must work together to unravel the conspiracy behind his frame-up in this intriguing thriller. The plot was a little confusing at first (not helped by some odd subtitles) but I managed to keep up and 2hrs+ just zipped by - lots of fun. Mmmmm Ji Chang-Wook in a confined space, a prison cell, all tense and needing help de-stressing Oooh suits you Sir!

Thanks to Shelter for the recommendation..... One of the gamers Korean names tranlated to English is "Mr Hairy" I wonder if this was why Shelter was interested in watching??? if so he will have been disappointed 😉😉

And if anyone is looking for other cracking Korean movies then can I suggest the ultra-violent blood & gore-fest action thriller PROJECT WOLF HUNTING (2022) and OLDBOY (2003) Park Chan-Wook's visceral strange, powerful tale of revenge...this is the original, NOT the 2013 hollywood remake.

RED 2 (2013)

You don't need a synopsis do you? - They "put the band back together " a 2nd time so the same crew but with Anthony Hopkins; Catherine Zeta-Jones & Sth. Korean actor Lee Byung-Hun....

CREED 3 (2023)

I think there is no need to tell the story. Everyone will know it. And with the first minute of this film you know how it will end.
But - yes but we like all these Rocky and Creed movies. They may be so predictable, but always they are exciting. I know some who don't like these movies - but we do it. And if you too will like such a predictable film, sit down and watch it - you will not be disappointed.
