I SAW THE DEVIL (2010)

"Revenge is a dish best served cold" so the saying goes. Well screw that, this violent & bloody korean revenge-fest pulls no punches. It's a little slow at times in the first half but when you are wondering where is this going you it becomes very clear - Revenge, cold calculated painful revenge, And as to the web of connections it stars Lee Byung-Hun (Red 2) and Choi Min-Sik (lead in the excellent OLDBOY - what do you mean you haven't seen it??).

some months ago I've seen this film as well and too I must say: watch it, like Slimjim has told you. Most of the Korean films are more than good and you will have a good, a creepy and an exciting film experience!

TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016)

Bullet Train meets Snakes On A Plane meets World War Z - and the result is Train To Busan , which they could have called Zombies On A Train.

The train might stop but from the first bite the action in this Sth Korean movie never does. It's a thoroughly entertaining horror with plenty of well choreographed action with lots of edge-of-your-seat moments.

INFINITY POOL (2023)

While staying at an isolated island resort, James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth), they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you'll be executed, or if you're rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.

This horror mystery is directed by Brandon Cronenberg (yeah the son of David) and tries to be a satire on the rich and powerful being able to do whatever they like and buy their way out of trouble. Many critics and audiences were blown away by it but I couldn't get into it and didn't give a damn about the characters - or their clones.

Hey, you might still like it, many critics absolutely loved it... maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it.

INTO THE STORM (2014)

As a new day begins in the town of Silverton, its residents have little reason to believe it will be anything other than ordinary. Mother Nature, however has other plans. In the span of just a few hours, an unprecedented onslaught of several powerful tornadoes ravages Silverton. Storm trackers predict that the worst is still to come, as terrified residents seek shelter, and professional storm-chasers run toward the danger, hoping to study the phenomenon close up and get a once-in-a-lifetime shot.

It's cheesy and predictable but some of the special effects are pretty good.

By the way: the film title for this film has got in Germany a real German title "STORM HUNTERS"! Totally German - isn't it?
But if STORM HUNTERS or INTO THE STORM I'll watch it now in one of the next days. Nevertheless Slimjin, thank you for your always profound reviews!

This evening we've watched an Austrian film from 2022 EISMAYER.

Sergeant Major Eismayer, the toughest training officer in the Austrian Armed Forces, has a secret he carefully hides from public view: he is homosexual. When he falls in love with a recruit, his artificial heteronormative existence is shaken to the core. To a man like Eismayer, a gay relationship cannot be reconciled with the traditional understanding of what a soldier should be. Will he preserve his image of a tough-as-nails man's man or follow his heart? Is there some way to do both? Based on real events. (IMdB)

Wow it is the true story from Charles Eismayer (then Sergeant Major) and the then recruit Mario Falak! A love relationship which startet very rough but developed to a wonderful, hard to believe end. A love so great and wonderful - I got tears in my eyes. For both of us A MUST SEE!

MUNICH: THE EDGE OF WAR (2021)

A British diplomat travels to Munich in the run-up to World War II, where a former classmate of his from Oxford is also en route, but is working for the German government. Yeah well that's what the im.db site says as a basic synopsis, what it doesn't add is "Wow this intense espionage thriller is a gripping; edge-of-the-seat; full-on historical drama ..... even though the ending's no secret".

I applaud the fact that it is bi-lingual, so the germans speak in german rather than english with the "usual accent". Using the subtitles didn't bother me. I just switched them on when the english were talking in that ridiculous 1930's clipped Air-Hair-Lair bollocks otherwise I wouldn't have understood a friggin' word :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Excellent screenplay & script. And as to the cast well what can I say, it stars George MacKay - and if that wasn't enough (and in my opinion it sure is enough) it also stars Jannis Niewöhner, (who I think looks a little like a Joe Cole/Taron Egerton clone) and Jeremy Irons.

Very good, highly recommended!!

This is real true - I can only agree with every word here! A very interesting film for everyone who is interested in the younger history. --- and Jannis Niewöhner is a wonderful and great German actor which has had his coming-out at the end of 2020.

And Slimjim I would like to help you in learning my language - so you wouldn't need the subtitles anymore! ;)

LUCKY (2017)

The antithesis of the noisy flashy superhero; car chases; gunfights & CGI. A gentle story (what little there is) of a man coming to terms with his life. It doesn't have a lot of dialogue and there's not much happening as we follow Lucky (the always watchable Harry Dean Stanton - and he's terrific in this at 90 yrs old) as he fills his days with the routine of yoga; walking; crosswords & quizzes and the local bar.

Tom Skerritt; Ed Begley Jr. & David Lynch also star. If you fancy a delightful feel-good movie with some funny lines and a tremendous performance give this one a go.

A strong American film from 1998 A BRIGHT SHINING LIE

Something in his past keeps career Army man John Paul Vann from advancing past colonel. He views being sent to Vietnam as part of the US military advisory force a stepping stone to promotion. However, he disagrees vocally (and on the record) with the way the war is being run and is forced to leave the military. Returning to Vietnam as a civilian working with the Army, he comes to despise some South Vietnamese officers while he takes charge of some of the U.S. forces and continues his liaisons with Vietnamese women. (IMdB)

The true story of J. P. Vann who came as an critic officer to Vietnam in the early 60s, was send back home and came back as a strong advocate of this war, and died there in 1972. Bill Paxton (1955 - 2017) is here in a very strong character part! If you like war movies with background knowledge - this is a film for you!

CLOSET MONSTER (2016)... no trailer due to actor age

Around the same time that his mother left their family eight year old Oscar witnessed a gay hate crime at school that left the victim bloodied and permanently paralyzed. Ten years pass. Oscar, befriended by his talking hamster Buffy, wants to get into a special effects make-up school (using his friend Gemma as a model), and has come to realize his spiteful father's anti-social, immature short-comings. When Oscar meets co-worker Wilder at the hardware store, sexual feelings begin to stir but accompanied by severe stomach pains (the memory of the hate crime). A farewell costume party for Wilder brings Oscar's issues to a head, expressed sometimes in surreal terms.

A gay coming of age story of sorts and I did manage to see it to the end - but only with the help of the fast forward. Not one I can recommend

REPO MAN (1984)

I love this movie, a cult classic ...... Frustrated punk rocker Otto quits his supermarket job after slugging a co-worker, and is later dumped by his girlfriend at a party. Wandering the streets in frustration, he is recruited in the repossession of a car by a repo agent. After discovering his parents have donated his college fund to a televangelist, he joins the repossession agency (Helping Hand Acceptance Corporation) as an apprentice "repo man". During his training, he is introduced into the mercenary and paranoid world of the drivers, befriended by a UFO conspiracy theorist, confronted by rival repo agents, discovers some of his one-time friends have turned to a life of crime, is lectured to near cosmic unconsciousness by the repo agency grounds worker, and finds himself entangled in a web of intrigue concerning a huge repossession bounty on a 1964 Chevy Malibu driven by a lunatic government scientist, with Top Secret cargo in the trunk.

Written & directed by Alex Cox , this off-beat film has a little of everything: action, comedy, urban decay, police drama, mystery, governmental conspiracy and even UFO's. The theme song is written and performed by Iggy Pop

Stars Emilio Estevez as Otto and Harry Dean Stanton

RENEGADES (2017)

As this was written by Luc Besson and has J.K Simmons up there in the cast I thought I'd give it a go. As for the plot, well pretty much the whole thing is explained in the trailer. It has the look and feel of a TV movie - you could easily swap the 5 navy seals for the A-Team.

A really, really extraordinary and very moving English film: SUMMERLAND (2020)

Alice is a reclusive writer, resigned to a solitary life on the seaside cliffs of Southern England while World War II rages across the channel. When she opens her front door one day to find she's to adopt a young London evacuee named Frank, she's resistant. It's not long, however, before the two realize they have more in common in their pasts than Alice had assumed. Gemma Arterton, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Tom Courtenay star in this intensely emotional story of love's endurance in trying times. (IMdB)

There is a very intense twist in it, which gives the film a very special note! Very recommended to all of you who like emotionally intense films.

I agree (y)(y) - I saw Summerland a while ago and thought it was really great

KELLY'S HEROES (1970)

So that basic plot in the unremarkable "Renegades" - american military decide to steal german gold from behing enemy lines. Well it's been done before of course (and sooooo much better)!! Clint Eastwood; Donald Sutherland; Telly Savalas & Carroll O'Connor romp ther way through this highly entertaining comedy heist drama. A cult classic, and it links neatly with my last 2 afternoon movies (LUCKY and REPO MAN) as it also features Harry Dean Stanton.

PROJECT POWER (2020)

On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user for just 5 minutes.. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop either bulletproof skin; invisibility; super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.

An entertaining 2 hrs of escapist hokum, held together by the relationship between the 3 main cast members.

THE GREAT RAID (2005)

Set in the Philippines in 1945 towards the end of WWII, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci and Captain Robert Prince, the 6th Ranger Battalion undertake a daring rescue mission against all odds. Traveling thirty miles behind enemy lines, they intend to liberate over 500 American Soldiers from the notorious Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp in the most audacious rescue ever

Based on true events it's a pretty good movie. worth a watch - stars James Franco & Joseph Fiennes
