TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG (2019)

So as you would expect it's about Australian bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang as they attempt to evade authorities during the 1870s.

It stars George MacKay as Ned and Chalie Hunnam and Nicholas Holt as law enforcers, it even has Russel Crowe in the earlier stages and they are all great - just a shame that the movie isn't. Not a lot happens in the first half. The cinematography is (at first) rather effective with barren lanscapes of dead trees and some interesting overhead drone footage but this gets overused as the film goes on and the second half is a rambling incoherent mess with some moments having strobe effects and punk rock soundtrack.

RHINO (2021) no trailer due to actor age

Starting out as a petty thief, a young man nicknamed "Rhino" quickly works his way up the criminal hierarchy in 1990's Ukraine. Rhino has only known power and cruelty, but with nothing left to lose, could he finally find a chance at redemption?

This film from The Ukraine starts with a 12 mins single-shot early life montage showing Rhino from child to adult, then the "story" begins detailing his decent into gang-land violence. A story that has been told countless times and this was one of those average re-tellings. It probably helps if you can speak Ukrainian as some of the english sub-titles were a little muddled.

Today a nice little comedy from France (2021) THE TEST

Annie lives in harmony with her husband Laurent and her children: the sensitive elders Maximilien and César; the younger Antoine whom Poupi, never-complaining teen, helps raising him. But a positive pregnancy test will disturb the harmony. (IMdB)

The story of a helicopter mum. All she want is, to do all the best for her children and husband - and everything goes wrong.
An easy afternoon movie.

TOMORROW WAR (2021)

The world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrives from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: 30 years in the future, mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high-school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Chris Pratt). Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.

So it's a lot of fun. It has Chris Pratt and J.K Simmons, some interesting temporal paradoxes... and some very ugly aliens. The plot is silly, looses it three quarters of the way in where it goes WTF? but is still worth a watch.

Cole falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie, but then makes the shocking discovery that she's a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world.

This is a terrific action comedy with two wonderful stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. If you want 2 hours of gaudy fun - this is the film for you.

WAR ON EVERYONE (2016)

Two corrupt cops set out to blackmail and frame every criminal unfortunate enough to cross their path. Events, however, are complicated by the arrival of someone who appears to be even more dangerous than they are.

What do you need to know? It stars Alexander Skarsgård; Michael Peña; Paul Reiser; Theo James; Caleb Landry Jones and the very dark comedic script is written by John Michael McDonagh - brother of Martin McDonagh, of In Bruges; 3 Billboards & The Banshees. It's a fast paced buddy-cop movie and Skarsgård and Peña make a great double-act. Much of the very funny comedy is in bad taste, the soundtrack features some hip-hop; rap; The Clash.... and lots of Glen Campbell

Alex is played by Liam Neeson and Guy Pearce is one of the FBI agents in this crIme/action/thriller. It's an okay "kick-ass" movie that fills up 2hrs.

The odds are massively stacked in Taizong's favour: opposing his 200,000-strong army is a mere 5,000 force at Ansi. It is lead by Yang Manchun, a man regarded as a traitor by the Goguryeon leader.

Like many Korean movies it has a long running time. This one is 2hr 16mins but apart from near the end where it could have done with a bit of editing it zipped along at a fair pace and the many action scenes are filmed very well. Enjoyable.

THE HIGHWAYMEN (2019)

When the full force of the FBI and the latest forensic technology aren't enough to capture the nation's most notorious criminals, two former Texas Rangers must rely on their gut instincts and old school skills to get the job done.

Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson are the rangers the movie also stars Kathy Bates; John Carroll Lynch; Thomas Mann & William Sadler. Some beautiful cinematography and an atmospheric soundtrack from the dependable Thomas Newman helps this slowburner as it takes time to tell it's story. Unlike the definitive Bonnie & Clyde movie this focuses not on the criminals but on the lawmens point of view.

Pow, right in the stomach - a film from 2022 (England) THE SON

It felt personal somehow, when thinking of myself in all their places. It is so hard and devastating. I sometimes see that look in my father's eyes, and sometimes in my mother's or my sister's, sometimes I have these mixed feelings and the deep conviction that I don't desire to keep on living, but I don't know how anyone else can survive this, anyone else that's similar to Nicholas. Such a real and painful movie. I don't know why it touched me so deep, and why it made me cry so hard, it felt too personal. And it makes you think, what can anyone do really? What can we do, and is it anyone's fault?

This text has written a reviewer on IMDb and I have nothing more to say. This was all so sad and so cruel what some families have to endure. I've cried like a little child. Hugh Jackman in one of his very best parts and the young Zen McGrath as well was overwhelming. Really, really a MUST SEE --- but please remember it is not a "Saturday-evening-entertainment-film".

Well you obviously had a better choice than me. I decided to watch COLOMBIANA (2011) on one of the free streaming services here. It's co-written and directed by Luc Besson so I thought it would be worth a look.... wrong, so wrong! It's rubbish, utter rubbish!

And agaion a frilm from the P.R.China from 2021 RAILWAY HEROES or HEROES OF '38

The historical story of an enemy fighting the wits and courage of an extraordinary brave group of ordinary heroes known as the "Lunan Railway Brigade" who desperately fight to defend their homeland. (IMDb)

This again was a very good and very interesting historical movie about the time of the Japanese occupation in China in 1938 and there about a resistance group in a railway repair center. Well too some political propaganda but not to beat it into you! We found it very good. And perhaps a recommandation for you?!

MR.RIGHT (2015)

Martha is trying to find new love after her recent break up and immediately bumps into Mr Right. Martha slowly discovers that he, Francis, is a hit man on the run and that he has made lots of enemies as now he chooses to only kill those that hire him. What will they do when the bad guys come after Martha and Mr Right and what will Mr Right do when the bad guys kidnap Martha?

It has Sam Rockwell as Francis and Tim Roth as the man who trained him and and it could have been a really good entertaining and funny movie. Sadly it is a bit of a mess in places and could have done with a good edit. It may have been they way her part was written and the way the director wanted her to play the part but I found Anna Kendrick annoying for a lot of the movie. Early on she says "I wanna do something terrible" and my immediate thought was....you already are! I did get to the end of the movie but only by fast forwarding from time to time focusing on the scenes without her. Sam Rockwell & Tim Roth are both great and the fighting/hitman scenes are fine too.

ASHFALL (2019)

Sth Korean disaster/thriller. Dormant since 1903 a volcano erupts on Baekdu Mountain located on the Chinese-North Korean border. Armed with the threat of imminent bigger eruptions, a team of uniquely trained professionals from South and North Korea unite. Together, they must join forces and attempt to prevent a catastrophic disaster threatening the whole Korean Peninsula. If only they could steal 6 nuclear warheads awaiting collection from Nth Korea by the American Navy for decommissioning and use them for a controlled explosion to safely release the enormous pressure building up in the volcano.........

Will the double agent work for or against them? Will they make it in time? Is a taxi the best way to transport a nuclear detonator? So a ludicrous plot but one that results in a fun filled 2hr+.
