THE GREAT RAID (2005) --- Again a film we've watched some time ago. We like films based on true events!

Yesterday evening came: AUGUST RUSH an American film from 2007

12 years ago, on a moonlit rooftop above Washington Square, sheltered young cellist Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) and charismatic Irish singer/songwriter Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) were drawn together by a street musician's rendition of ''Moondance'' and fell in love. After the most romantic night of her life, Lyla promised to meet Louis again, but despite her protests, her father rushed her to her next concert--leaving Louis to believe that she didn't care. Disheartened, he found it impossible to continue playing and eventually abandoned his music while Lyla, her own hopes for love lost, was led to believe months later that she had also lost their unborn child in a car accident. Their orphaned son (Freddie Highmore) uses his musical talent as a clue to find his birth parents. (IMdB)

A moving story (or better a fairy tail) about the magic of music and the power of love. GREAT!

THE GREEN MILE (1999)

Take a Stephen King novel and give it to the director of Shawshank Redemption - add Tom Hanks; Michael Clarke Duncan; Sam Rockwell; James Cromwell; Barry Pepper and Harry Dean Stanton and what you get is this magnificent 3hr cinematic experience. Still has the WOW factor even after repeat viewings.

LOVE AND MONSTERS (2020)

Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson, along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since creatures like lizards & insects mutated into giants and took control of the land. After reconnecting over the radio with his high school girlfriend, Aimee, who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony, Joel begins to fall for her again. As Joel realizes that there's nothing left for him underground, he decides to venture out to Aimee, despite all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.

Was I drawn to this movie as it stars Dylan O'Brien? of course! But as it turns out this post-apocalypse lovestory/road movie is a lot of fun .... monsterous fun. Mmmm Dylan O'Brien in a confined space, sexually frustrated, all tense and needing help de-stressing Oooh suits you Sir!

SPY GAME (2001)

CIA operative Nathan Muir, is on the brink of retirement from the field when he learns his protégé Tom Bishop has been arrested in China on a charge of espionage. No stranger to the machinations of the CIA's top echelon, Muir hones all his skills and irreverent manner in order to find a way to free Bishop.....

Robert Redford and Brad Pitt star in this Tony Scott espionage thriller. The plot is dense and intense and requires full attention but is worth the effort
...............
Edit: I forgot to warn you that at about 35 mins it uses Brothers In Arms, Dire Straits on the soundtrack

HUNDE, WOLLT IHR EWIG LEBEN (Dogs, do you want to live forever) a German war film from 1959 in b/w about the horrible battle of Stalingrad.

1942. First lieutenant Wisse, young and still idealistic, is sent to the Eastern front where a renewed German offensive is in full swing. During his trip, he witnesses the hardships entailed by the occupation of Russia, but keeps his faith in the success and ultimate good of the national-socialist endeavour. Upon arriving at his new quarters, he quickly gets informed about the precarious nature of the strategic situation. As a matter of fact, Wisse is unusually well-placed to gain an unvarnished insight into the state of military affairs. His assignment: liaison officer to the Romanian army. His station: in the Russian plain, on the flank guarding the advance of the German sixth army to Stalingrad... (IMdB)

IMO one of the very best war movies from Germany. And many scenes remembered me of the stories my granddad told me - he was one of the soldiers of the battle of Stalingrad and came back home from Russia in the middle of October 1955. So this film was personally for me very emotional.

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS (2008) No trailer due to actor ages

Through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the young son of the commandant at a German concentration camp, a forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.....

I haven't seen this for a few years but it has lost none of it's power. It is still a painful emotional and jaw dropping watch.

The cast are all great but stand out performances from youngsters Jack Scalon and Asa Butterfield.

FREE FIRE (2016)

Given the movie I watched this afternoon I needed something far lighter for this evening and this ticked the boxes.

Set in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shoot-out and a game of survival. This dark comedy action/drama is the shoot-out to end all shoot-outs. Stars include Cillian Murphy; Arnie Hammer; Brie Larson; Michael Smiley

Just we have watched it. OMG - when the film was over, both of us were quiet. No one wanted to speak a word. My man just is going to bed and only want to have his peace.

Yeah... OMG and silence is probably the most common reaction to the powerful and raw emotions that you get from watching this movie

ADORE (2013)

Lil and Roz are two lifelong friends, having grown up together as neighbours in an idyllic Australian beach town. As adults, their sons have developed a friendship as strong as that which binds their mothers. One summer, all four are confronted by simmering emotions that have been mounting between them, and each find unexpected happiness in relationships that cross the bounds of convention when each begin a steamy affair with the other's son, but trouble begins to brew when one of the two young men desires a lover his own age.

It might have two top class female leads in Naomi Watts & Robin Wright and two good looking male leads, Xavier Samuel & James Frechville but it was a bit of a snore really.

JOINT SECURITY AREA (2000)

In the DMZ separating North and South Korea, two North Korean soldiers have been killed, supposedly by one South Korean soldier. But the 11 bullets found in the bodies, together with the 5 remaining rounds in the assassin's magazine, amount to 16 cartridges for a gun that should normally hold 15. The investigating Swiss/Swedish team from the neutral countries overseeing the DMZ suspects that another, unknown party was involved - all of which points to some sort of cover up. The truth is much simpler and much more tragic.

I grabbed this as a) One of it's stars is Lee Byung-hun from RED and I SAW THE DEVIL and b) It also stars Song Kang-ho, who played the father in PARASITE and c) The director and co-writer is Park Chan-Wook, who did the excellent original OLDBOY.

It got mainly good reviews but I couldn't get into it and hit the off button after about 30/35 mins.... I didn't watch the trailer before watching the movie and having now seen the trailer maybe I'll go back and take another look when maybe I'm more in the mood. From the trailer it looks like it gets more interesting later on.

NIGHTCRAWLER (2014)

A dark thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling - where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. When he catches the eye of news director, Nina, who welcomes the chance to raise her station's ratings, Lou goes to increasingly greater lengths to catch the "money shot.".

Nightcrawler is very good, a tense suspenseful crime/psychological thriller. Jake Gyllenhall as creepy Lou is superb. Rene Rosso stars as Nina, Bill Paxton & Riz Ahmed also star.

Yesterday we watched a movie from Red China CLOUDY MOUNTAIN from 2021

The opening of a new tunnel, which took ten years to build, coincides with a series of serious cataclysms. Suddenly, the lives of everyone in the town near the tunnel's opening come to depend on the actions of father and his son, who is a scientist.

Well it is a a disaster film with really good impacts and it is as well thrilling. And now the "but"! But it is full of communist propaganda. According to the motto: "The world my break down - the Party will be on your side and help you! The most unbearable scene: a man falls from a mountain face to death. And (and that is really true!!!!) during he is falling he snap to attention and salutes! That was the moment we couldn't bear it anymore!

Well if you fancy a Chinese disaster movie check out SKYFIRE (2019)

Tianhuo Island is as beautiful as a paradise. It almost makes people forget that it is located in the "Ring of Fire" the world-famous Pacific Rim volcanic belt. The island has now been transformed into a thrill-seeking theme park by greedy businessman Jack Harris (Jason Isaacs) despite vulcanologists warnings.

What could possibly go wrong.......... I think you can guess!! It's a cheesy popcorn action disater movie, the plot is pretty predictable but the CGI is good.

Thank you Slimjim for this hint. I just looked in my film list and this film too is in my collection - but until now unseen. So I will give it a try as well. Too the other one was a good movie and has had a GREAT CGI, too the story itself wasn't bad --- but these horrible propaganda was unbearable.

Today a film from South Korea - PROJECT WOLF HUNTING (2022)

Follows dangerous criminals on a cargo ship who are transported from the Philippines to South Korea, as they unleash a sinister force after an escape attempt leads to a riot.

Wow this was the most bloody film I've ever seen. Never before we have watched such a blood and gore spectacle. It was so much that in a special way it was even funny. But if you like excessive brutality which is tending to be funny - watch it! I'll recommend it, but not to guys who are spooky ;)

Oh yeah! I watched this last month - much blood & gore!
PROJECT WOLF HUNTING (2011)

WARNING - The level of violence and gore in this 2 hr korean action/horror is well up the scale.

The plot is about dangerous criminals on a cargo ship who are being extradited & transported from the Philippines back to South Korea. They engineer a break-out and escape after very vicious fighting/stabbing/shooting/axing etc. But it turns out they were not the only passengers - deep down in the bowels of the ship is a small lab with a few technicians watching over a genetically improved zombie-like superhuman soldier..... so a totally bonkers plot but entertaining in it's own way. It's an intense adrenaline blood and gore fest (apparently they got through 2.5 tons of fake blood - I can believe it!!!)

My movie for tonight was THE GREY (2012)

After their plane crashes in Alaska, six oil workers are led by a skilled huntsman (Liam Neeson) to survival, but a pack of merciless wolves haunts their every step..... I cannot tell you how it ends as I never got that far.
