SAND CASTLE (2017)

The story follows a young soldier, and his introduction into the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Based on true events, it bears witness to the destruction and horrors of war. An inexperienced American private discovers the true cost of war when his unit is sent on a dangerous mission to repair a water pumping station in a rural Iraqi village. (Imdb)

So it's a fairly typical modern war movie with the message "War is hell" but this one stars Nicholas "he looks real cute in army fatigues (and even better out of them)" Hoult... and maybe (or do I mean obviously) this was a main reason for me grabbing a copy (c'mon I'm not the only Nick Hoult fan am I???) Sadly no "Nicky is naked" or "Nicky in his snug fitting boxer briefs" moments in this movie 😥😥

I grabbed a copy of GIGI & NATE today, and yesterday a copy of THE WOMAN KING. Thanks for the recommendations, I will let you know my thoughts ... Have you watched the utterly charming RYE LANE yet??
Yes my dear friend,
some weeks ago we've watched as well RYE LANE. And if you are speaking from an "utterly charming" movie so you are Again totally right.

But yesterday we watched an American film which acted during the 2nd World War. Title COME OUT FIGHTING.
I think it was an TV-movie. Cheap and dull! I've seen in the meantime so many war films from this period - and sure the Germans are the enemy and the bad ones. OK - everything OK!
But this film has only wonderful, utterly fearless black American Heroes and the Germans in this film have been a bunch of total idiots and cowards. So allow the question: why lasted this horrible war 6 years to defeat complete idiots and cowards who didn't know what is left or right?
I think such films are totally bullshit.

On the contrary SAND CASTLE is one of the really good war films and more than worth watching - if Nicky is naked or not :giggle:

21 BRIDGES (2019)

Thrust into a citywide manhunt for a duo of cop killers, NYPD detective Andre Davis begins to uncover a massive conspiracy that links his fellow police officers to a criminal empire and must decide who he is hunting and who is actually hunting him. During the manhunt, Manhattan is completely locked down for the first time in its history - no exit or entry to the island including all 21 bridges. (Imdb)

It's put together well enough and has plenty af action but it's a fairly predictable plot and most audiences will see the twists coming and will know how this one ends. The cast is great and headed by Chadwick Boseman; J.K Simmons; Sienna Miller & Taylor Kitsch..

And another war film from 1990 MEMPHIS BELLE
and this film was great, and was showing honest the cruelty of war. In the end I've had accelerated heartbeat and some tears in my eyes.

It's May 1943 at a US Army Air Corps base in England. The four officers and six enlisted men of the Memphis Belle - a B-17 bomber so nicknamed for the girlfriend of its stern and stoic captain, Dennis Dearborn - will soon start their twenty-fifth mission, having completed their previous twenty-four successfully with nary an incident, while fewer and fewer other planes are coming back from their missions at all. If they complete their next mission successfully, they will be the first Army Air Corps B-17 Crew to complete their tour of duty. Visiting communications officer Lt. Col. Bruce Derringer wants to publicize and highly tout their accomplishment, even before it happens, as a long term good news campaign at a time when there is little good news to report. Derringer's plan is against the wishes of the base commander, Col. Craig Harriman, who would prefer to treat the ten as any of his other hard working men. The previous success of the Memphis Belle is despite the disparate natures of the ten men, whose personalities and backgrounds could not be more different. Each of the ten has a differing view of Derringer's publicity campaign as well as to the probable success or failure of what will be their last mission regardless, a dangerous one into enemy territory over the skies of Bremen, Germany. (IMDb)

Perhaps to this time they could make really good and much better war films than today. If you haven't seen this movie, please try to get it. It is a film you will not even forget quickly. Very recommended and run away as fast as you can if you see there will come COME OUT FIGHTING, unless you like cheap rubbish.

And to my friend Slimjim: you are right 21 BRIDGES is predictable but nonetheless a very exciting film. And which film is not in the one or the other way predictable?

THE INSPECTION (2022)

A young gay black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside. But even as he battles deep-seated prejudice and the grueling routines of basic training, he finds unexpected camaraderie, strength, and support in this new community, giving him a hard-earned sense of belonging that will shape his identity and forever change his life. (Imdb)

Written and directed by Elegance Bratton in a moving retelling of his own story. The cast headed by Jeremy Pope with Bokeem Woodbine & Gabrielle Union all give very good performances. It's solid "by-the-numbers", simply telling the story - but it's a strong and moving one.

It's from A24, who brought us such movies as Everything Everywhere All At Once; Little Bird; Midsommer; Moonlight and The Lobster - hence my deciding to give it a watch

THE SWORDSMAN (2020)

Tae Yul, once a great swordsman now injured, lives in the mountain with his daughter. As his eyes injury is getting worse, the daughter decides to come down from mountain. Somehow she finds herself in the midst of a political plot and gets abducted. Tae Yul now must fight hordes of swordsman and assassins to save her. (Imdb)

17th century Korea - So neighbouring warlords are feuding and I was a little confused at the start trying to work out which "Lord" was which and which were his fighters but that soon settled down. It's a fairly straightforward story, told with plenty of action.......and lots of well coreographed swordplay, The clip is from very early on in the movie.

ITHACA (2015)

With his older brother off to war, fourteen-year-old telegram messenger Homer Macauley comes of age in the summer of 1942. (Imdb)

Well it might star Meg Ryan; Sam Shepard; Jack Quaid; Alex Neustaedter; Gabriel Brasso and have cameo appearances of a non-speaking Tom Hanks...... but it's all a bit dreary, apart from the emotional final 10/15mins or so (and anyone in the audience will have known how it was gonna end)

THE EQUALIZER (2014)

While I was checking something on the Imdb I saw an ad for Equalizer 3 (due later this year) and it prompted another watch of the first one.

Robert McCall is a former special service commando who faked his own death in hopes of living out a quiet life. Instead, he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to save a young girl, and finds his desire for justice reawakened after coming face-to-face with members of a brutal Russian gang. McCall becomes the go-to man when the helpless require the kind of vengeance they would never find without his skills. (Imdb)

The review on imdb says - "Cliched and done to death formula! But still fun to watch on a night when you don't want to be bothered with something cerebral. Denzel Washington is good as ever & the Russian Mafia doesn't stand a chance in hell anyway! Am gonna hit the sequel next folks..." and that seems to cover it prety well for this violent revenge movie.

This time an English film from 2020 - 23 WALKS

A gentle, sweet, funny, romantic story of love in later life. Following a couple in their sixties, Dave (Dave Johns) and Fern (Alison Steadman) who get to know one another over the course of 23 dog walks. Set against the dramatic background of the changing seasons of one year. (IMDb)

A quiet and nice little film about an older couple who met themselves in their later years together with their dogs. It is a touching story from two older lone hearts. A movie for a plaintive film evening.

THE WOMAN KING (2022)

The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for. (Imdb)

Well it may have become surrounded in controversy over the accuracy of it's depiction of history (Dahomey did exist until 1904 in what is now Benin) but cinematicly it's a good movie with a strong cast headed by Voila Davis; Thuso Mbedu; Lashana Lynch; Sheila Atim & John Boyega.

OUTBREAK (1995)

Army doctors struggle to find a cure for a deadly virus spreading throughout a California town that was brought to America by an African monkey. (Imdb)

I thought it was about time I gave this another watch. I had forgotten just how good this is. And what a cast - Dustin Hoffman; Donald Sutherland; Rene Russo ; Cuba Gooding Jr; Morgan Freeman & Kevin Spacey.

ROGUE AGENT (2022)

So no trailer as it's best to come to this without knowing too much about the plot (and preferably nothing). I thought that overall it was a pretty tightly plotted thriller (inspired by true events) although the first half could have benefitted from a bit of editing and at about 30 mins in I was wondering where this movie was going, or even if it was going anywhere at all. Anyway I stuck with it and it cranked up the pace, and the intrigue. This slow-burner "true" story takes its time setting up the characters and pieces but once you get a sense for what’s happening, it’s hard not to be gripped by this appalling and kinda crazy true account. Stars James Norton & Marisa Abella who are both convincing.

CRISIS (2021)

No trailer - too many spoilers

Three stories about the world of opioids collide: a drug trafficker arranges a multi-cartel Fentanyl smuggling operation between Canada and the U.S., an architect recovering from an oxycodone addiction tracks down the truth behind her son's involvement with narcotics, and a university professor battles unexpected revelations about his research employer, a drug company with deep government influence bringing a new "non-addictive" painkiller to market. (Imdb)

So this compelling thriller with it's heavy plot stars Gary Oldman; Armie Hammer & Evangeline Lilly. It's a bit clunky early on as we switch between the 3 stories but it's an entertaining watch and the 3 leads are on good form - Gary Oldman for once not in shouty/scenery chewing mode.

War And Peace 1965,1966,1967.(thats how long it took to make) Colour. widescreen, Russian language, English subs, accurate ones too.

Tolstoy's book in full would take up a film 60 hours long, this, the definitive cine version, crams it down into only 6 hours. This is nobodys idea of a fun night in but it is a rewarding, unforgetable experience. Nothing like this will ever be made again. Even with the Red Army supplying
ten thousand men as free extras it still cost several fortunes to make, that could never happen today.
Of course you already knew that war is the most grotesque stupidity that man is capable of but it is a message that bears repeating again and again as thousands of men die in front of you and then thousands more and then thousands more and then...

A Greek film from 2021: SMYRNA

The historical incidents and facts that preceded and occurred during the occupation of Smyrna in 1922 by the Turkish army, including the massacre of the local Greek and Armenian population, are recounted through the lives of the Baltatzis family members. (IMDb)

A film like a tsunami. It starts nice with family parties, nice talks. Greeks and Turks in peaceful coexistence - and than came the politicians which breed discord and "I'm better than you" and reverse. And in 1922 the volcano exploded and Smyrna burned to death. And thousands and thousands Armenians were killed 100 years ago. This film is very recommended to all of you!

And a last question: what has changed until today? Do you have an answer?

AIRPLANE! (1980)

Some days you want a movie that's serious; thought provoking; beautifully constructed/filmed with a fizzing script and atmospheric soundtrack.....

....... other days you just want 100% pure piss-yourself-laughing silliness. Yesterday was such a day for me.
