THE BANK OF DAVE (2023)

Based on the true-life experiences of Dave Fishwick; 'Bank of Dave' tells the story of how a working class Burnley man and self-made millionaire fought to set up a community bank so that he could help the local businesses of Burnley not only survive, but thrive. In his bid to help his beloved community of Burnley he has to take on the elitist financial instutions of London and fight to receive the first, new banking license to be issued in over 100 years. (Imdb)

"Based on true events"... well yes the man exists and he did want to set up a new community bank but a lot has been fictionalised. It's still an entertaining movie though and it's nice to see Rory Kinnear with a bit more to do in a movie than his role in the recent 007 movies (as Tanner, M's Chief-of-Staff). Other cast members include Joel Fry; Phobe Dynevor: Hugh Bonneville; Cathy Tyson & Paul Kaye

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (2004)

During the reign of the Tang dynasty in China, a secret organization called "The House of the Flying Daggers" rises and opposes the government. A police officer called Leo sends officer Jin to investigate a young dancer named Mei, claiming that she has ties to the "Flying Daggers". Leo arrests Mei, only to have Jin breaking her free in a plot to gain her trust and lead the police to the new leader of the secret organization. But things are far more complicated than they seem... (Imdb)

Well it looks great with vivid colours and some good fight scenes but the plot is paper thin with twist after twist after twist. Maybe not the best of it's genre.

An English film from 2022: LIVING (with an overwhelming Bill Nighy!!!!)

Overwhelmed at work and lonely at home, a council bureaucrat's life takes a heartbreaking turn when a medical diagnosis tells him his time is short. Influenced by a local decadent and a vibrant woman, he continues to search for meaning until a simple revelation gives him a purpose to create a legacy for the next generation. (IMDb)

A hardheaded official who changed his life after knowing that he has only a short time left to live. If you like more action flics - this is nothing for you because you will feel boring. But if you have a heart and like emotions --- take it!

I saw this back in March.....
LIVING 2022

..... It is poignant, subdued, melancholic and moving. The cast put in fine performances but the film belongs to Bill Nighy. He gives a masterclass in understatement, every unspoken word, twitch, glance or heavy sigh - a superb portrayal.

JOHN WICK : CHAPTER 4

I was (sort of) looking forward to this the "final" chapter but was disappointed, unlike many many reviewers who thought it was the best in the series. At 2hrs 41 mins it's just too damn long imho - maybe 60 mins too long? 40/45 mins could easily have been cut without causing any issue with the plot (such as it is). My main gripe is that some of the fight scenes just go on... and on....and on.... and on!!

And it looks like a Chapter 5 has been green-lit..... I don't think I will be bothered.

And it should be the next we wanted to watch. So ... thank you, we will wait!

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE (2021)

The affectionate story of the lifelong romance between teenagers Tom and Joe, from their first humble meeting in the 1970s, in a world only just waking up to homosexuality, to the sunset of their time together decades later, 'You Are My Sunshine' is a refreshingly and apologetically sentimental, sweeping love story set in the British countryside. A romance for the ages, through the ages- bask in the glorious light of 'You Are My Sunshine' (Imdb)

"Apologetically sentimental" - yeah they got that right! It flips between the 70's and present day and I found it a little slow in places. The sections set in the 70's work much better, where the chemistry between the two young leads works well but seemed lacking in the older cast who didn't really do it for me.

If you are thinking "Well I'll give this one a look. Where can I find it I wonder?" one place is here on GH

Don't laugh - but we watched a film from 2001 THE ORDER with Jean-Claude Van Damme

A playboy criminal contacts his dad after stealing a Faberge egg. Later it seems his dad has gone missing in Israel so he heads there. His disappearance is linked to the religious sect: The Order. Lots of fight and chase scenes. (IMDb)

I'm surprised that this film hasn't got an Oscar (irony off!) Nevertheless we wanted an action flick and we got an action flick and we have had really good fun with it.

Like I posted when I watched AIRPLANE! sometimes you don't want a deeply emotional, thought provoking serious movie - you just want to be entertained with frothy pop-corn and sometimes totally mind-numbing (although Fast & Furious 9 might be a step too far) ... and in the end any movie you enjoy is a good movie 'cos it's done its job.
....................................................................................................................................

SILK ROAD (2021)

Right at the beginning the caption reads " This story is true - Except for what we made up or changed" this crime thriller follows the rise and fall of Silk Road, the infamous darknet site that sent a seismic shock through the World Wide Web. Young, idealistic, and driven to succeed, Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson) creates the internet's first unregulated marketplace: Silk Road. But when it becomes a multimillion-dollar pipeline for illicit drugs, Ross is set on a collision course with Rick Bowden (Jason Clarke), a disreputable and dangerously unpredictable DEA agent, who will use any means necessary to take him down.

I grabbed a copy of this as it stars Nick "Love, Simon" Robinson. It starts off a bit slow but picks up the pace once the FBI & DEA start the hunt. It's not that great, it's okay, but could have been better.

I want to watch it as well. Am I right? Isn't there a movie with the same title from 2017 from the Netherlands and is telling the same story? I think so!?

Yes the Imdb confirms there is.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

RONIN (1998)

Aa team of professional killers from all over the world is assembled to get a hold on a certain case with some mysterious content. The case is in the hands of some ex-KGB spies and there are many people and organizations that will do anything to get it Imdb

So C4 in the UK have popped this on their free streaming service so I gave it another watch. Robert DeNiro & Jean Reno star in this high octane caper-thriller (sadly Sean Bean is in it, but happily not for long!) Lots of fun.

FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (1986)

So along with RONIN C4 in the UK are also streaming this cult classic from John Hughes - and it has lost none of it's endearing charm over the years. A very funny script well delivered by the cast.

And although Marvel have been doing the "scene during/after the credits" this movie was doing it in 1986 as Matthew Brodrick, as Ferris, talks to the audience one last time

TRADING PLACES (1983)

Another classic 80's comedy. This time from director John Landis in which a snobbish investor (Dan Akroyd) and a wily street con artist (Eddie Murphy) find their positions reversed as part of a bet by two callous millionaires (Ralph Bellamy & Don Ameche) Denholm Eliot and Jamie Lee Curtis also star.

SILK ROAD from 2021

Thank you Slimjim for the tip to this film. I know we have watched a long time ago the film from the Netherlands, but I couldn't remember so much from it.

So today we watched this one too and I must say: we liked it. This film developed slowly but steady a tension although you are knowing the end from the start on. (y)

CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER (2006)

A Chinese emperor (Chow Yun-Fat) returns to his palace to discover his wife (Gong Li) is having an affair with her stepson, the Crown Prince (Jay Chou), who is himself actually in love with the Imperial doctor's daughter. In the lead up to the Chong Yang festival, an army of golden-plated warriors lay siege to the palace.

There is an awful lot of dull melodrama with the feuding family....then the last 25mins or so a major fight between armies, then a bit more melodrama. It has some beautiful cinematography at times; a vivid colour palette; 4000+ extras and 10,000+ yellow crysanthemums. Beiging's Forbidden City sure didn't look like this when I visited.

ON THE LINE (2022)... no trailer, I mean who cares?

A radio talk-show host (Mel Gibson) takes a call, where an unknown person threatens to kill the showman's entire family on air. To save loved ones, the radio host will have to play a survival game and the only way to win is to find out the identity of the criminal. (Imdb)

Well none of the above plot synopsis occurs in the first 20mins which is where I switched this yawn-athon off. It might get really good at 25mins and beyond - but maybe not. Based on the the initial 20 mins I suggest you avoid.
