FLIGHT (2012)

An airline pilot saves almost all his passengers on his malfunctioning airliner which eventually crashed, but an investigation into the accident reveals something troubling. (Imdb)

So yet another movies that C4 here in the UK have dropped onto thier free streaming service so I ook another look. Denzil Washington stars and such as John Goodman, Don Cheadle, Nadine Valazquez & Bruce Greenwood support in this action/drama. The first 30mins or so contain the action then the drama kicks off. Well worth a watch.

RRR a.k.a. RISE ROAR REVOLT (2022)

During the British era, Malli, a small tribal girl, is taken away by British governor Scott Buxton and his wife Catherine against the wishes of her mother. The British government find that a tribal Komaram Bheem has started his search for her and could be an obstacle for the British army. Rama Raju, a ruthless Indian cop never given his due by the british promises to bring him in dead or alive. Bheem by now has reached he city in search of Malli and pretends to be a mechanic, Akhtar. During a train accident on a bridge over a lake he and Rama Raju risk their lives and save a kid and become best of friends without either realising who the other is..... But each man will clash with the other and will thirst for each other's blood in order to complete their missions. (Imdb)

WOW!!! Where to start with this Indian Bollywood/Tollywood blockbuster epic. To say its a bit of an action movie would be understatement. It's a bro-mance but a bro-mance with tigers & dancing. It is a melodrama, with the melodrama turned up to way above the max. with the plot deleriously over the top and with a few twists thrown in, some humour too. It's about friendship, right versus wrong and the end of the British Raj in India (the Governor and his wife are wickedly portrayed like a Mr & Mrs Cruella DeVille). As there are no "15 years before" captions I was confused a couple of times until I realised we were in flashbacks to the main lead characters childhood. The acting is good, the soundtrack is at time atmospheric or heavily percussive with some beautiful songs in Telugu or Hindi (I'm guessing from the subtitled lyrics that many were written for the movie) and it being indian the movie ends with a huge big dance number. The cinematography is really good and as you can see in the YTube clip at times it is visually wonderful, nice use of repeated images of clasped hands, fire & water together; blood running, reflections in water.

I loved it, if you want to be thoroughly entertained for 3hrs and 5mins then give this a try. Check Netfl1x

A film from Italy from 2014: TRÄNEN DER SEXTNER DOLOMITEN (Tears of the Sextner Dolomites)

Franz and Peter are being called up for military as WWI was in full swing. Loyalty is required in battle, though the two have always been enemies. But the war and the harsh conditions in mountains make it impossible to harbor hostilities. (IMDb)

A very gripping story about two South Tyrolean young men during WW I in the freezing cold Dolomites where they have to fight against the Italien Alpin-Army. A very tragic story .... but a sublime scenery of the grandeur of the Dolomites.

HISTORY BOYS (2006)

A select number of boys, who managed to achieve grades which merit an application to Oxford or Cambridge in their A-Levels, experience a term of revelation at their grammar school as they are tutored for the "most important exam of their lives" in history. Imdb

So after the adrenaline-rush that was last nights Tollywood mega action bromance epic I needed to take it down a few levels of excitement so chose to re-watch this gently comedy from the pen of Alan Bennett. Stars Richard Griffiths; Frances De La Tour; Russel Tovey; Domonic Cooper..... oh yeah James Corden's in it too

A film from Finland from 2022: SISU

During the last desperate days of WWII, a solitary prospector (Jorma Tommila) crosses paths with Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover that they have just tangled with no ordinary miner. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word "sisu", this legendary ex-commando will embody what sisu means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And no matter what the Nazis throw at him, the one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back - even if it means killing every last Nazi in his path. (IMDb)

Wow, man oh man - a film like a blow with a fist! A One-Man-Army on a vendetta! GREAT! Very recommended - but please don't take things there too seriously. If you like films like SUPERMAN - here you have a Finnish Superman! This film is thrilling and will give you great fun! Don't miss it - you would baulk something. Thumbs up for it!!!! (y)

BEAU IS AFRAID (2023)

Following the sudden death of his mother, a mild-mannered but anxiety-ridden man confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home. Imdb

So what to say about this 3 hour Ari Aster directed movie. I thought it was an over long, confusing, total mess. No idea how it ends as I never got that far. Joaquin Phoenix puts in a pretty impressive performance but that cannot redeem this self indulgent rubbish.

EXTRACTION 2 from 2023 (Netflix)

After barely surviving his grievous wounds from his mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tyler Rake is back, and his team is ready to take on their next mission. (IMDb)

And this new mission is sheer action, shootings, car racings, shootings, wild chases and again shootings. Chris Hemsworth, this time not Thor - or too - a modern Thor. A film you will have forgotten next week - but in the meantime you will have a pure and great action adventure. Take some potato crisps and one or two bottles of beer and you will have a great evening. And by the way, the end of this film opens the chance for EXTRACTION 3! (y)

BANDIT (2022)

After escaping a Michigan prison, a charming career criminal assumes a new identity in Canada and goes on to rob a record 59 banks and jewellery stores while being hunted by a police task force. Based on the story of The Flying Bandit. (Imbd)

Having a backlog of 45+ movies I have been hanging on to those I expect/hope to be really good and watching those I don't expect to be that exciting so I can then delete and free up disc space - keeping the best 'til last. Hence last nights BEAU IS AFRAID which I wasn't expecting too much of and this - it was okay, it reminded me in some respects of the DiCaprio/Hanks "Catch Me If You Can" but that's a much better movie than Bandit. (I only ended up with it due to those "People who watched this also watched..." after grabbing that ON THE LINE with Mel Gibson, who is also in this)

My plan doesn't always work of course... with this, BEAU and ON THE LINE I guessed right and they were pretty much forgetable but with RRR I was completly wrong, not expecting too much and it was a fecking awesome movie and pretty certain to be in my top 10 movies watched this year (I cannot recommend it enough!)

I would like so much to watch RRR - but since now this film is not German Dubbed on the market! What a pity - I hope this will change soon!

Your best chance will be a version with German subtitles (As far as I know there are no dubbed versions) I know some people hate subtitles but considering the movie is just over 3 hours long it won't be like having a novel to read ;) as there a long sections with a lot of action going on with not much dialogue. I have a copy with english subtitles and found it ok.

I've never liked dubbing and always go for subtitles. I mean dubbing Marlon Brando and all the other brilliant actors in the "Godfather " and "Godfather 2" into Swedish, German, Italian or whatever - impossible!

I don't mind subtitles generally. A few movies have so much dialogue that you can end up "reading" the film rather than watching it and sometimes whilst reading them you can miss some major plot issue if it's a visual clue but for most movies they are fine and as I commented before regarding RRR there is a lot of action that has almost no dialogue, and the Brits speak English which is handy for me! ;)

The important thing to me and the main reasons why I don't like dubbing are the actors voices - you just can't exclude Marlon Brando's or Robert de Niro's voices in movies where Brando or de Niro are main actors, or to give some good Swedish examples: Sven Wollter, Rolf Lassgård and Ola Rapace.

Wow so many reactions about my "dubbing" wish! ;)
At first: I have found the movie with German subtitles. And I'll take it, because I think as well that this film will not come German dubbed.

Second: I know the most countries in the world hate "dubbed" movies and they want to watch them in the original language with subtitles. But in Germany it is common practice that foreign movies will be Germanised! So Gorgik9 you are totally right, we here don't now the original voice of Marlon Brando or from Robert De Niro. But we know the German "voice" of these actors and sure from time to time it will happen that the actor of the German voice is very ill or he dies. As soon there is an outcry: the voice is strange what happened?! And Slimjim is correct as well when he says that if there is too much text you have to read - you cannot really and good concentrate to the pictorial plot. And that mostly in films in a language you have never learned.

But once more in Germany and I think as well as in Austria and Swizzerland (?) we wouldn't go to the cinema if the film is not dubbed. So when in Rome, do as the Romans do!

A Guy Richie film from 2023: THE COVENANT

Guy Ritchie's The Covenant follows US Army Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Afghan interpreter Ahmed (Dar Salim). After an ambush, Ahmed goes to Herculean lengths to save Kinley's life. When Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given safe passage to America as promised, he must repay his debt by returning to the war zone to retrieve them before the Taliban hunts them down first. (IMDb)

This film ist MORE than recommendated. A great film about humanity in a time and world where humanity sometimes is a foreign word. And the title THE COVENANT tells the whole story: A bond. A pledge. A commitment. Watch it if you can - here you can watch it on Amazon. If you let this film go - you will have missed an unique experience.

I could be wrong but here in the UK I think most foreign language films shown at the cinemas are subbed rather than dubbed but I think many, maybe all, DVD/BluRay wll have the choice of either? I had not realised it was mainly dubbed version shown on the continent.

After all this I really hope you enjoy the movie!! A 3hr Bollywood extravaganza that will entertain to the max. - and it won't feel like a 3 hr movie.

My movie for tonight -

HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE (2022)

A crew of young environmental activists execute a daring mission to sabotage an oil pipeline, in Daniel Goldhaber's taut and timely thriller that is part high-stakes heist, part radical exploration of the climate crisis. Based on the controversial book by Andreas Malm.

Better than I thought it was going to be. It's well paced with a few nailbiter moments.
