An American film from 2022 and again with Gerard Butler: LAST SEEN ALIVE

Will's soon-to-be ex-wife mysteriously vanishes at a gas station. He delves into the town's criminal underbelly while running from the authorities in a race against time to find her. (IMDb)

The story is old and predictable and many movies have told it in the past - but nonetheless it was a very exciting movie evening.
A good and reliable action stunner - no more no less! And you know I'm a fan of Gerard Butler!!!!

An Amereican film from 2001 - BEHIND ENEMY LINES

Fighter navigator Chris Burnett wants out: he was looking for something more than the boring recon missions he's been flying. He finds himself flying the lone Christmas day mission over war-torn Bosnia. But when he talks pilot Stackhouse into flying slightly off-course to check out an interesting target, the two get shot down. Burnett is soon alone, trying to outrun a pursuing army, while commanding officer Reigert finds his rescue operation hamstrung by politics, forcing Burnett to run far out of his way. (IMDb)

A very exciting war-action movie. I didn't know that Owen Wilson can play as well serious parts! But he was great together with Gene Hackman. It was a good film for an movie evening. Sometimes a little bit too pathetic and heroic and in some scenes also unreliable - but hey, it was an action thriller. And in an action thriller must not everything be logical.

Agreed, it's a good watch.

My movie for tonight was ATHENA (2022)

Hours after the tragic death of their youngest brother, Idier, his three siblings, Karim; Abdel & Moktar have their lives thrown into chaos. When the unexplained circumstancesof Idel's death raise questions among them, they go in search of answers. (Netfl1x)

This is a 2022 french film which I saw with subtitles and given the recent events in France it's a timely watch as it is set around a riot in a suburb, Athena. It is a gripping watch, visceral and engrossing from start to finish, particularly the 2nd half when things step up a gear or two - jawdropping at times. The main leads are really good and the camerawork, much of it handheld with long single shots & extreme close-ups is excellent. The YT clip is of a couple of opening scenes - if you watch it you will see the option to watch the full trailer.

AIR (2023)

Follows the history of sports marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro, and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of basketball, Michael Jordan. (Imdb)

So it was Shelter's recommendation that prompted me to watch this as my initial thoughts when I heard about it was that it didn't sound all that interesting but co-star and director Ben Affleck has put together a great ensemble cast including Matt Damon; Jason Bateman; Viola Davis; Chris Messina and Chris Tucker and the result is a film that (given it's about a business deal from years back) is much more entertaining than I was expecting.

I'm happy to hear that. I've had the same feelings at first and after it I was very happy that I've watched.
We have had this evening only a nice porn flic - and now we will play the film for us once more! 😉

UNDER THE SILVER LAKE (2018)

Sam is a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman frolicking in his apartment's swimming pool. When she vanishes, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal and conspiracy in the City of Angels. (Imdb)

So......Errrrr... Ummm.... Where to start with this? I grabbed a copy as it stars Andrew Garfield and his performance has been highly praised and it has also been described as "Donnie Darko-esque" and there have also been comparisons with David Lynch's Twin Peaks. So obviously I'm in. However whereas Donnie was a really entertaining watch with a followable plot, even with the many WTF? moments this is less so. It looks great and has a surrealist, film noir feel but the writing and direction let it down. The plot goes nowhere, the mysteries and riddles didn't make any sense. I stuck it through to the 2hr 20min end hoping that there would be some "reveal" that might help make sense of it but was disappointed.

On the positive side I am getting short of room on my USB film store so deleting this one will free up 2.7Gb!

THE NINES ((2007) no trailer due to actor age

A troubled actor, a television show runner, and an acclaimed videogame designer find their lives intertwining in mysterious and unsettling ways. Gary, an actor who plays a cop on television drinks and drives, uses crack, and crashes his car. He is placed under house arrest and the watchful eye of a publicist, the cheery and tough-minded Margaret. Gary meets Sarah, an attractive and seemingly-willing neighbor. His friendship with Margaret blooms and strange things happen: he finds notes he doesn't remember writing, he hears noises, and he seems to bump into himself in the kitchen...... l what's going on. Imdb

Well because I was looking at webpages on UNDER THE SILVER LAKE the algorythms suggested this one and I can see why. We are in Donnie Darko/Twilight Zone terretory again, but much more entertaining than last nights choice. For the first 35 mins or so it's a fairly usual storyline then it goes oddball. Ryan Reynolds; Hope Davis and Mellissa McCarthy star. An entertaining watch (if you like surreal/wierd)

OPEN RANGE (2003)

Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall), Charley Waite (Kevin Costner), Mose Harrison (Abraham Benrubi), and Button (Diego Luna) freegraze their cattle across the vast prairies of the West. When their wayward herd forces them near the small town of Harmonville, the cowboys encounter the corrupt Sheriff Poole (James Russo) and kingpin rancher Denton Baxter (Sir Michael Gambon), who govern the territory through fear, tyranny, and violence. Boss and Charley find themselves inextricably drawn towards an inevitable showdown............

This was featured on one of those "10 great movies you might have missed" and so I gave it a watch. The cinematography is good and the performances are great, as you would expect given the cast, Annette Benning also stars There was a 30min section around halfway where the pace slowed but other than that I thought it was fine.

THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY (2021)

This Is Not A War Story tracks a ragtag group of combat veterans in New York whose anti-war art, poetry and paper-making keep them together, despite the spectre of their friend’s suicide and the ever-crystalizing fact that healing from war is sometimes an impossible mission. (YTube)

It follows a multi-generational community of artist veterans, who make handmade paper out of military uniforms. Shredding them, pulverizing them the uniforms are reconstituted into paper, onto which the veterans express their rage, humor, memories, and hopes, in the form of art and poetry. I haven't posted the trailer as it just shows one scripted scene whereas the majority of the "movie" is much closer to a fly-on-the-wall documentary and mostly filmed in their workshop. It was highly acclaimed by the critics - I thought it was dull. (Still it's another 1.86Gb storage freed-up)

I've been re-watching two modern classics yesterday and today: 1) Oliver Stone: The Doors (1991) starring Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison; 2) Tony Scott: Top Gun (1986) starring Tom Cruise as Pete "Maverick " Mitchell.

SYNECDOCHE (2008)

Life is looking pretty bleak for theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman). His wife and daughter have left him, his therapist is more interested in plugging her new book than helping him with his problems, and a strange disease is causing his body to shut down. Caden leaves his home in Schenectady, New York, and heads to New York City, where he gathers a cast of actors and tells them to live their lives within the constructs of a mock-up of the city.

I couldn't get into this and hit the Off button early.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS (2016)

A "story inside a story," in which the first part follows a woman named Susan who receives a book manuscript from her ex-husband, a man she left 20 years earlier, asking for her opinion. The second element follows the actual manuscript, called "Nocturnal Animals," which revolves around a man whose family vacation turns violent and deadly. It also continues to follow the story of Susan, who finds herself recalling her first marriage and confronting some dark truths about herself. (Imdb)

Great cast of Jake Gyllenhall; Michael Shannon; Amy Adams & Aaron Taylor-Johnson but I found it a bit of a mess - I would have been happier I think with a movie made just from the story in the manuscript. It frees up another 1.98Gb though. :)

EQUALIZER 2

So Liam Neeson & Keanu Reeves were busy so Denzel go to have that certain set of skills and a set of morals to go with them. All I wanted tonight was a popcorn movie, nothing too taxing on the brain, and this was a perfect fit.

In the way of the Taken/John Wick franchises No. 3 is due later this year

AVENGEMENT (2019)

One of those "people who liked this also liked this" algorythyms pointed me towards this, but so wrong - this was utter utter garbage. A crap script, awful stereotypical characters coupled with some really bad acting from a terrible no-skilled cast - even worse than Sean Bean, that's how fecking bad they were. These delusional saddos probably thought they were making something like a big budget Guy Richie geezer-movie, in reality - absolute dross!
