BARBIE (2023)

For me, Barbie has just the right mix of fun, with some sharp satire on gender and self esteem underneath. (Until the end when the satire moves to the foreground.) While the focus is on Barbie herself, Ken's story weaves through and eventually complicates things. He starts out living in Barbieland (with its female dominated polictics) merely as a Barbie accessory - like a handbag, parasol, or backpack. He visits the real world and is astonished that men dominate important positions. For the rest, you will have to see the movie.

It's not for everyone, but I loved it.

WRATH OF MAN (2021)

Mysterious and wild-eyed, a new security guard for a cash truck surprises his co-workers when he unleashes precision skills during a heist. The crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from. Soon, the marksman's ultimate motive becomes clear as he takes dramatic and irrevocable steps to settle a score. (Imdb)

This is a Guy Ritchie movie and stars Jason Statham so you know what to expect and you prety much get exactly that although as it's set in the USA there's no "cockney geezers" apart from Jason. Pretty much shooty/slappy/kicky/stabby from the begining. A slightly confusing plot at first but a couple of "3 weeks before" moments gets that cleared up. Jason got the part so I'm guessing that Gerrard Buttler & Liam Neeson were busy?

THE WHALE
Idaho, 2016. Scarred by the profound wounds of grief and guilt, couchbound Charlie, an online writing instructor living with chronic obesity, now has a crystal-clear view of his secret intentions. And confined to his claustrophobic and musty apartment, the self-destructive shut-in has all the time in the world to contemplate the damaging faults of the past, fatherhood, and reconciliation. Because, more than anything, flawed Charlie longs for communication and reconnection. After all, he hasn't spoken to his estranged, angry teenage daughter Ellie in years. But everyone knows whales don't live in the shallows. Do love and forgiveness have the power to wipe away the tears and the painful mistakes of a lifetime? (IMDb)

Brendan Fraser is amazing - the story is very tragic - the film is like a stage play. I was fascinated but I don't know: did I like this film or not??

SPIDERHEAD (2022)

This is set in the near future, when convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects in hopes of shortening their sentences. When one prisoner finds himself the test patient for a new pharmaceutical capable of generating feelings of love, he begins questioning the reality of his emotions and sets out to discover the truth. Imdb

It has a great cast, lead by Chris Hemsworth & Miles Teller; who are all very good - sadly the writing is poor and it plods along for 45 mins without much happening, then something happens but only after another 20 mins or so does it get really interesting. Disappointing

TRIGGER POINT (2021)

If there was a traier with a voice-over it would probably says something like " He was a man with special-ops skills but he had left that life behind, or so he thought until he is dragged back into a world of deceit and double cross....." It stars Barry Pepper and he is very good but the story and script are poor. The end is obviously deliberately engineered for a Part 2 but I cannot see that happening.

SON OF A GUN (2014)

Locked up for a minor crime, 19 year old JR quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. Protection, if you can get it, is paramount. JR soon finds himself under the watchful eye of Australia's most notorious criminal, Brendan Lynch. But protection comes at a price. Lynch and his crew have plans for their young protegee. Upon release, JR must help secure Lynch's freedom, staging a daring prison break. As a reward, he's invited to join the crew as they plan a gold heist that promises to deliver millions. However, as things start to go wrong, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. JR finds himself unsure of whom he can trust and on a collision course with his former mentor. Imdb

So this prison/gangster/heist/doublecross movie is fairly entertaining. The pace slows down a little in the middle but on the otherhand it's helped by having Ewan McGregor & Brendon Thwaites as the two leads,

GIGI AND NATE (2022)

Gigi & Nate is the story of Nate Gibson, a young man whose life is turned upside down after he suffers a near-fatal illness and is left a quadriplegic. Moving forward seems near impossible until he meets his unlikely service animal, Gigi -- a curious and intelligent capuchin monkey. Although she is trained to assist Nate with his basic needs, Gigi helps Nate find what he needs most of all: hope

Want an emotional, melancholic, feelgood film with a warm fuzzy feeling and an utterly adorable lead character (that's Gigi I'm talking about)? Well if you do give this a watch. My thanks to Shelter for the recommendation. It took me a while to realise Jim Belushi plays Dad

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (2021))

Peter Parker's secret identity is revealed to the entire world. Desperate for help, Peter turns to Doctor Strange to make the world forget that he is Spider-Man. The spell goes horribly wrong and shatters the multiverse, bringing in monstrous villains that could destroy the world IMDB

I have had a copy of this for ages but kept holding off from watching given how bad some of the other recent Marvel movies have been. Thor Love & Thunder was poor, Eternals was terrible and don't get me started on the latest Ant-Man or Dr Strange yawn-a-thons but decided to dive in and give it a go.

I nearly gave up on this at around 30mins in thinking " Oh no, not friggin' Dr Octavio again" (not a fan of him) but happily I kept going and things got better. On the whole a good entertaiing watch with some good twists and surprises. One downside for me was the long (too long) section in with spidey and Dr Strange in the folding multiverses - seemed like just an excuse to show off the CGI skills.

A thriller from 2018 TRAFFIK

John, a mechanic who's built a '69 Chevelle hot rod for his girlfriend Brea's birthday present, is planning to propose to her at a romantic weekend at a cabin. Brea needs the holiday away as she just got fired as a newspaper journalist for being too thorough. The proposal is leaked at the birthday dinner with the couple lending them the cabin. What are friends for? At a gas station on the way there, they bump into some unpleasant bikers and a scared woman. The "cabin" turns out to be so much more than just a cabin as they have rich friends. The romantic weekend turns into hell when the bikers et al find them after Brea accidentally got some of their secrets. (IMDb)

For us a high voltage thriller. Surely as well here the story is told very often before - but nonetheless it was a nail biting movie event. But there is one confinement: the end is very suddenly - but perhaps only my feeling. Recommended for a gripping evening.

Yesterday and today I've been re-watching two modern classics both having Matt Damon as the leading actor: 1) Gus Van Sant "Good Will Hunting " (1997) ; 2) Anthony Minghella "The Talented Mr. Ripley " (1999).

26 years later, Good Will Hunting remains a masterpiece. (y)

A remarkable film that’s stood the test of time.

Here's my fav quote from Gus Van Sant's classic drama 💬

22 JULY (2018)

Based on the real life tragedy in Norway 2011, where 77 people were killed in a terrorist attack by a far right extremist. We follow one of the survivors' physical and emotional struggle after the attack, as well as the trial of the terrorist. A trial that shows how Norway's legal system tries to preserve the human rights of a single perpetrator that executed the worst massacre in Norway. Imdb

I was aware of this terrorist attack but the memory had faded somewhat and the film is a difficult watch but that is rather the point. The attack is shown "clinically" without gloryfying and the majority of the 2hr 35min film concentrates on the survivors and the trial. Apparently the movie recieved some criticism for giving the attacker the notoriety he presumably wants & enjoys from his prison cell.

Engrossing and definitely worth seeing.

What you have said about this film is more than true! You will see this film and when it's over you'll ask yourself: what happens in the head of such a person? You are asking and asking - but I think you will never find a real answer.

PIXIE (2020)

To avenge her mother's death, Pixie masterminds a heist but must flee across Ireland from gangsters, take on the patriarchy, and choose her own destiny. IMDB

This popped up on a free streaming service so I thought I'd give it another watch. Beautiful Irish scenery and a plot with some snappy dialogue and violent twists. A good cast - Olivia Cooke; Ben Hardy & Daryl MacCormack are the 3 leads Colm Meaney & Alec Baldwin also feature.

Today I've re-watched one of the great cinema classics: Carol Reed's "The Third Man " (1949) with Joseph Cotten, Orson Welles, Alida Valli and Trevor Howard. Screenplay by Graham Greene and of course the evocative zither music by Anton Karas. If you've ever heard the Harry Lime Theme you'll remember this zither melody for the rest of your life!

WAR PONY (2022) ........no trailer due to actor age

At 23, Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting) just wants to make something of himself. Whether it's siphoning gas, delivering goods or breeding Poodles, he is determined to hustle his way to the "American Dream". Meanwhile, 12-year-old Matho (LaDainian Crazy Thunder) can't wait to become a man. Desperate for approval from his young father, a series of impulsive decisions turns Matho's life upside down and he finds himself unequipped to deal with the harsh realities of the adult world.

This is mainly filmed on the Pine Ridge Reservation in Sth Dakota and uses a non-professional cast drawn from the local Ogala Lakota people. It documents a grim, pretty depressing environment for just about everyone. An interesting movie - but not the one for a Friday night with pizza & beers.

MULHOLLAND DRIVE (2001)

This David Lynch dreamlike and mysterious movie is a twisty neo-noir with an unconventional structure (see the clip for an example of the style) that features Naomi Watts as a woman on the dark fringes of Hollywood. A dark-haired woman (Laura Elena Harring) is left amnesiac after a car crash. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty (Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita's true identity. The story is set in a dream-like Los Angeles, spoilt neither by traffic jams nor smog......

I tried to watch this several yrs back and as it has recently been Remastered from the original 35mmm into 4k I thought I'd try it again. It might look sharper and brighter than the 35mm but it's just a umfathomable. I seem to remember the general concensus about the plot/script is that most of the movie's 2.5hr running time is all a dream. I didn't enjoy watching it the first time - and I hit the kill-switch early this time.
