SEMPER FI (2019)........... a.k.a.BROTHERS IN ARMS

Cal, a by-the-book police officer who makes ends meet as a Marine Corps reservist along with his rowdy and inseparable group of childhood friends. When Cal's younger, reckless half-brother Oyster accidentally kills a guy in a bar fight and tries to flee, Cal forces him to face the music. After an unfair sentence, Oyster fights for survival in a dangerous Pennsylvania prison system while Cal and his friends are deployed to fight the lethal insurgency in Iraq. Overseas, Cal's world is shaken, and after he barely makes it home alive, he resolves to break Oyster out of prison - no matter the cost.

The cast are fine but the movie cannot decide if it wants to be a meaningful drama or an action movie - and fails at being either.

HEADSHOT (2016)

In this ulta-violent Indenesian movie Iko Uwais plays a young man who washes ashore, an amnesiac with a serious head injury whose past comes back to haunt him shortly after being nursed back to health by a young doctor. Violence ensues. Sweet, sweet violence. Imdb

If you are looking for something to rival the Sth Korean blood & gorefest movies then try this one - it's brutal and relentless.

MOSUL (2019)... no trailer due to age of some on screen

Between 2014 and 2017, ISIS occupied the Iraqi city of Mosul. During those years, the only group to fight the occupiers continuously was Nineveh province's SWAT unit, made up of local men who had either been injured or had a family member killed by ISIS. This movie is a gripping tribute to these fighters for whom the incentives were intensely personal and it drops us right in the center of urban warfare, but also allows for telling moments that reveal the men beyond their combat roles. A rare American film designed to bring Iraqi perspectives forward, Mosul is both muscular and humane. Imdb

I think the subtitle file I grabbed was poor quality and not all dialogue was covered but I was able to follow the plot of this pretty intense film. It's a Russo brothers movie, an american movie... but an Iraqi war movie about Iraqis.

DEAD MAN (1995)

In the late-1800s, the meek accountant from Cleveland, William Blake, spends the last of his already meagre savings to get to the frontier community of Machine where a job awaits him. Eager to make a fresh start, Blake arrives at his destination, only to discover that the position no longer exists. Gravely wounded and on the run from a relentless trio of bounty hunters after a deadly shoot-out, William flees the inhospitable industrial town and has a chance encounter with the enigmatic Native American spirit-guide named "Nobody", who believes Blake is the reincarnation of the visionary English poet, William Blake. Now, before the endless American wilderness, the two companions embark on a peril-laden odyssey of mysticism, transformation, and spirituality, until William crosses over into the spirit world. What lies on the other side?....

This is a very unusual movie. It is written & directed by Jim Jarmusch and it's in black & white. It stars Johnny Depp as William and Gary Farmer as Nobody. Billy Bob Thornton; Lance Henriksen also star along with cameos from such as John Hurt; Gabriel Byrne; Iggy Pop and even Robert Mitchum - then throw in a ranchy guitar solo soundtrack from Neil Young. It's a leftfield take on the western, revisionist with a side order of mystical dreamscape, beautifully shot in high contrast black & white with a slow meandering plot, a different way to spend 2hrs.

RED (2008) ...no trailer as too many spoilers

An older, reclusive man's best friend and inspiration for living is his 14-year-old dog named "Red". When three troublesome teens kill the dog for no good reason, the grieving man sets out for justice and redemption by whatever means available to him. Imdb

The straightforward narrative is played out, and well portrayed by the excellent cast, but then that cast is lead by the always good Brian Cox, ably supported by Tom Sizemore & Kim Dickens with Noel Fisher, Kyle Gallner & Shyloh Fernandez as the teens.

For me a very good film, which we have watched some time ago. I like these "Charles Bronson-like" movies.

An Irish film from 2022: ROSIE AND FRANK

A widow who has given up on life becomes convinced that a stray dog is the reincarnation of her Hurling-loving husband. (IMDb)

A very quiet little film - but a more than heartwarming film. A stray dog gives a widow back her joy of living and a harassed boy suddenly is a little hero.

ACCIDENT MAN (2017)

Mike is a tough hitman, who makes his hits look like accidents or suicide. He's in a gang of hitmen, each with his own style. When his loved ex is killed, Mike looks for those responsible. Imdb

Well what to say... It's a Scott Adkins movie AND it has Michael Jai White guesting so much thumpy; stabby; shooty; kicky; hitty; slappy times - just take a look at the trailer for ALL you need to know. It doesn't take itself too seriously and is a dumb but fun & escapist 105 mins. When I went hunting for the trailer I spotted there is already a sequel out.

THE BOMBARDMENT (2021) Original title: Skyggen i mit øje

On March 21st, 1945, the British Royal Air Force set out on a mission to bomb Gestapo's headquarters in Copenhagen. The raid had fatal consequences as some of the bombers accidentally targeted a school and more than 120 people were killed, 86 of whom were children.

The film gets a little unwieldly at times but at it's core is a story of a tragedy, a horrific true event.

RED WHITE AND ROYAL BLUE (2023)

What shall I say: for both of us an amazing film! You can laugh, and cry and both together! After HEARTSTOPPER (Series) another
heartstopper! Both leads acting on a high level - you can see as the sparks fly between them. If you are a person of earnestness, you may say: romantic balonay. But if you are a person of emotion: you will love this film sooooo very much, so as we did. And for you this film is more than recommended!!!!

THE MARKSMAN (2021)

Hardened Arizona rancher Jim Hanson (Liam Neeson) simply wants to be left alone as he fends off eviction notices and tries to make a living on an isolated stretch of borderland. But everything changes when Hanson, an ex-Marine sharpshooter, witnesses 11-year-old migrant Miguel (Jacob Perez) fleeing with his mother Rosa (Teresa Ruiz) from drug cartel assassins led by the ruthless Mauricio (Juan Pablo Raba). After being caught in a shoot-out, a dying Rosa begs Jim to take her son to safety to her family in Chicago..... Imdb

It's all a bit slow for the mostpart, with the action heating up a bit more towards the end but overall the word that comes to mind is: Forgettable

BETTER THINGS (2008)

Feeling desperate, lonely and hopeless, a group of youths in rural Britain turns to drugs to dull the pain of their empty lives....

Well it most likely was made with an earnest endeavour to make a statement about these issues and to make the audience think long and hard about them but I suspect that a big % of the audiences will (like me) hit the off button well before the end. It's bleak with very little dialogue and there is no "plot" as I could see lots of vacant staring into space from swings and benches in public parks or armchairs... monotonal & miserable.

Most definitely NOT one for a Friday night beer-and-pizza party! Utterly grim

AIRPLANE (1980)

I was tired last night and so a heavy going complicated plot was not an option, particularly as I was likely to fall asleep before the end so this was perfect.

WEEKEND - an english film from 2011

On a Friday night after a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what's expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special. That weekend, in bars and in bedrooms, getting drunk and taking drugs, telling stories and having sex, the two men get to know each other. It is a brief encounter that will resonate throughout their lives. Weekend is both an honest and unapologetic love story between two guys and a film about the universal struggle for an authentic life in all its forms. It is about the search for identity and the importance of making a passionate commitment to your life. (IMDb)

Love sometimes will meet you like a lightning bolt. And this is what happened here to our both leads. But they have only a weekend. It is an elegiac story - but truly recommended.

PARADISE (2023)

In the future, a method of transferring years of one's life to another changes the world and turns AEON into a billion-dollar company. To pay off debts, Elena must "pay" 40 years of her life, robbing her and her husband of their future together.

This german movie is set in a distopian future and explores some interesting themes on morals and conscience; does being an innocent victim mean it's ok to make another innocent your victim? The movie is a little slow during the earlier scenes but then the pace picks up and throws in unexpected plot-twists too.
