OPPENHEIMER

A dramatization of the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who had a large hand in the development of the atomic bomb, thus helping end World War 2. We see his life from university days all the way to post-WW2, where his fame saw him embroiled in political machinations. (IMDb)

The fascinating story of the birth of the A and the H Bomb and the story how quick you can fall down if you are not howling with the current political views.

EVENT HORIZON (1997)

In the year 2047 a group of astronauts are sent to investigate and salvage the long lost starship "Event Horizon". The ship disappeared mysteriously 7 years before on its maiden voyage and with its return comes even more mystery as the crew of the "Lewis and Clark" discover the real truth behind its disappearance and something even more terrifying. Imdb

And the terrifying thing is that spending a truckload of $$$ on special effects and having a cast including Sam Neill; Laurence Fishburne & Jason Issacs doesn't mean the film will not turn out to be a confusing cliche ridden load of old rubbish.... it has a cult following apparently, sorry but that's not one I want to join

DUNKIRK (2017)

May/June 1940. Four hundred thousand British and French soldiers are hole up in the French port town of Dunkirk. The only way out is via sea, and the Germans have air superiority, bombing the British soldiers and ships without much opposition. The situation looks dire and, in desperation, Britain sends civilian boats in addition to its hard-pressed Navy to try to evacuate the beleaguered forces. This is that story, seen through the eyes of a soldier amongst those trapped forces, two RAF fighter pilots, and a group of civilians on their boat, part of the evacuation fleet. Imdb

So given that with the writers/actors strike there is likely to be a lag before a lot of movies currently in producton get finished and released I thought I'd save the 25+ "new" movies I have on the usb store and take a look back at a few fav movies starting with this incredible piece of cinema. I haven't watched this for a long time and had kind of forgotten just how awesome it is. A pretty incredible story buy jeezz what a telling of it. It's edge of the seat gripping for most of it's running time, the cinematography is stunning, the cast are excellent and add into the mix Hans Zimmers music, less of a soundtrack more of an atmospheric sound sculpture - the occassions when he reworks Elgars Nimrod gave me (as an englishman) a lump in the throat - it's so quintessentially british. Christopher Nolan's materpiece? Probably

My Octopus Teacher. Oscar winning documentary. You'll never think about an octopus the same way again. Probably the smartest invertebrate animals in the world. Comparable to some of the smartest vertebrates. If you like nature films, try this one.(y)(y)

CATCH-22 (1970))

Director Mike Nichols made a pretty good go at filming what is generally regarded as an unfilmable book (it's a heck of a lot better than that TV series from a few years back) I haven't read Joseph Heller's excellent novel for a few years and I'd forgotten just how funny this black comedic satire is.

edit: and the cast list - Alan Arkin; Martin Balsam; Art Garfunkel; Bob Newhart; Paula Prentiss; Richard Benjamin; Anthony Perkins; Charles Grogin; Martin Sheen; Jon Voight - and Orson Wells too!

UNDERWORLD (2003)

Vampires and Werewolves have been sworn enemies for hundreds of years. Now fought in a Gothic-like setting, the conflict takes an unexpected and deadly new turn. Selene, a beautiful vampire warrior, uncovers a Lycan plot that could prove fatal for her entire race. She shadows a human, Michael, the Lycan's supposed target. Although she finds herself becoming attracted to him, he becomes infected with the lupine disease during a violent struggle with the Lycan overlord, Lucian, long thought to be dead. Now both sides must decide how to end the conflict and save their species as new and terrifying secrets unearth themselves and threaten their entire existance.

Yes the franchise lost its way with too many sequels but the original movies were a lot of fun with good plots and great cast - Kate Bekinsale; Shane Brolly; Michael Sheen and an often heavily made-up (but still as watchable as always) Bill Nighy. Loads and loads of pure escapist fun.

THE PROPOSITION (2005)

In the harsh outback of 1880s Australia, the brutal Burns brothers are wanted for a vicious crime. When Charlie Burns is captured, the officer arresting makes a startling proposition in order to end the cycle of violence: Charlie must hunt down and murder his violent older brother Arthur, in order to save his youngest brother from the noose. Imdb

The western is not dead - it just moved to Australia. Nick Cave's screenplay is bleak, powerful and at times extremely violent. The cinematography is great but then given the locations they film it would be hard not to look this good. The atmospheric soundtrack is also supplied by Nick Cave ( I could be wrong but I think it's a legal requirement that all Aussie films HAVE to have a soundtrack from Nick Cave?). As to the cast, well the main leads are Ray Winstone; Guy Pearce; Emily Watson; Danny Huston: David Wenham & John Hurt.

THE PROPOSITION - 2005

Once more my very thanks Slimjim for your advice to watch this film. It startet a little slow but in the end it was a shocking
adventure. The whipping scene was one of the most cruel scenes I've ever seen. But the end was very open - like a serial cliffhanger.

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM (1987)

In 1965, an unorthodox and irreverent DJ named Adrian Cronauer begins to shake up things when he is assigned to the U.S. Armed Services radio station in Vietnam. Imdb... as if you needed to know.

So due to recent medical events I expected to fall asleep early so chose a classic from way back. A funny but serious anti-war movie. Maybe a touch too schmaltzy but Robin Williams performance more than compensates - particularly when you realise that all of the radio broadcasts he does in the movie were un-scripted and improvised by him.

JOY RIDE (2023)

No trailer as this utter crap about 4 american asians who go to china doesn't deserve one. I had heard a little about the film and thought it would be utter shit but most of the reviews say it's great - I hated it and switched off early. I think I did very well to last for 35 mins.

SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER (2018)

Alan is a stylish tailor with moves as sharp as his suits. He has spent years searching tirelessly for his missing son Michael, who stormed out over a game of Scrabble. With a body to identify and his family torn apart, Alan must repair the relationship with his youngest son Peter and solve the mystery of an online player whom he thinks could be Michael, so he can finally move on and reunite his family. Imdb

I knew almost nothing about this but I grabbed a copy of this as it stars Bill NIghy, I mean that's reason enough isn't it? Well it was an absolute joy. It starts a little slowly, not a lot of storyline, and takes it's time to tell it but tells it with some beautiful cinematography. My guess is the makers were fans of Wes Anderson's style. The cast, Jenny Agutter; Sam Riley; Tim McInnerny & Alice Lowe are great but the movie belongs to Bill Nighy, he gets better as he gets older. It's off-beat; melancholic; low budget & low-key - but utterly charming, I really enjoyed it.

SWIMMING WITH MEN (2018)

A man who is suffering a mid-life crisis finds new meaning in his life as part of an all-male, middle-aged, amateur synchronised swimming team. Imdb

Another film I missed from a few yrs back, and another charming heartwarming feelgood & funny movie. Bill Nighy isn't in this one (but so easily could have been). Rob Bryden; Jim Carter; Jane Horrocks; Danny Mayes; Adeel Akthar; Rupert Graves & Thomas Turgoose are.

SEE HOW THEY RUN (2022)

In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theater underground, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril Imdb

I've had this on the usb store for ages and gave it a go tonight as (like the last few nights) I have been choosing shorter movies, around 80-90mins as I am still suffereing from fatigue following my operation. There is a mystery here. It's why could a movie starring Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan, Adrien Brody, David Oyelowo, Ruth Wilson, Harris Dickinson, Shirley Henderson, Sian Clifford, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Reece Shearsmith, Charlie Cooper & Tim Key be so terrible. Maybe I was just not in the mood, ot too tired, but I couldn't get into it.

THE ENGINEER (2023)

Follows the biggest manhunt in the history of Israel to find Yahya Ayyash, the mastermind bombmaker who oversaw a group of suicide troops in Israel in the middle of the 1990s Imdb

Stars Emile Hirsch. There are loads of other people who can't act very well in it too, but it doesn't matter much 'cos the script is poor. Some of the dialogue is either in arabic or hebrew so it's subtitled and I wish the english dialogue had been too as the sound recording is so bad you cannot hear most of what is being said making it difficult to follow the plot (if there is one) Who knows, who cares? - it's rubbish. Avoid.
