THE HARDER THEY FALL (2021)

When outlaw Nat Love discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck is being released from prison he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary, his right and left hand men hot-tempered Bill Pickett and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth and a surprising adversary-turned-ally. Rufus Buck has his own fearsome crew, including "Treacherous" Trudy Smith and Cherokee Bill, and they are not a group that knows how to lose. Imdb

So this righteously new school Western earns that accolade by having a predominantly black cast lead by Jonathan Majors; Lankieth Stanford & Idris Elba and a mostly reggae/rap/hip-hop/funk soundtrack. Does it work? Well in the main yes, the direction is stylish and I guess Tarantinoesque will be an easy reference as in one or two places it's ultra-violent. The first hour or so can be a bit slow but it picks up along the way to it's 2.5 hr runtime.

THE BAKER (2022)

"The Baker" centers on a quiet, solitary man whose estranged son suddenly comes back into his life with a granddaughter he never knew existed. When his son disappears on a shady business opportunity, the baker must do everything he can to find his son and protect his granddaughter from the mob hitmen sent to find her. Imdb

This predictable revenge movie might star Ron Pearlman and have Harvey Keitel in it as well but they can't prevent it plodding along in it's formulaic way until Horray the credits. Awful soundtrack for much of it too. No Ytube trailer as they all have the grandaughter in them - jeez she's annoying. On the plus side that's another 3.1Gb space freed up!

THE LAST STAND (2013)... trailer gives far too much away.

The leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff. Imdb

Being a bit knackered I wanted something lightweight and spotted this on a streaming service. This was Arnold Schwarzenegger's comeback movie after being California Governor. Forrest Whittaker & Johnny Knoxville also star, along with a brief appearance from Harry Dean Stanton. It's a mindless popcorn movie, a silly plot but passes the time.

THE MUSTANG (2019)

While participating in a rehabilitation program training wild mustangs, a convict at first struggles to connect with the horses and his fellow inmates, but he learns to confront his violent past as he soothes an especially feisty horse Imdb

Another on on my usual free streaming service. Matthias Schoenaerts stars, along with Bruce Dern in this feelgood movie. It was okay - definitely not your typical prison movie.

In the meantime we have watched several movies - but no one was worth to mention it particularly. So much nonsense - and Slimjim I'll understand your anger about some so called "movies". They aren't worth to mention and have stolen life time.

But today we watched an American film from 2021 "12 MIGHTY ORPHANS"

Haunted by his mysterious past, a devoted high-school football coach leads a scrawny team of orphans to the state championship during the Great Depression and inspires a broken nation along the way. (IMDb)

A truly fascinating and inspirational story (based on true events) worth to watch the 120 minutes! Very recommended to all who like sport dramas and to everyone who believes in his own strength in times when you think you have lost your strength! Watch it and in the end you will be more then satisfied!!!!

THE BOOK OF ELI (2010)

A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. Imdb

Denzil Washington; Gary Oldman; Mila Kunis & Ray Stevenson star in this cross between The Road & Mel Gibson era Mad Max, Part road-movie; part bleak distopian future with an evangelical sub-plot. Sadly not a mix that really works well and it's a bit of a mess overall.

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS (2017)

Disgraced poet Ted Wallace is summoned to his friend's country manor to investigate a series of unexplained miracles. Imdb

Roger Allam; Tim McInnerny & Matthew Modine star in this adaptation of the Stephen Fry novel. Despite a wonderful performance by Roger Allam as the drunken poet (much of this is in a voiceover) this bawdy farce is a bit of a mess.

NOAH (2014)

This was on a free streaming service and I thought I'd give it a go. It's Darran Aronofsky's "version" of Noah, the flood and the Ark, starring Russel Crowe; Anthony Hopkins and Ray Winstone. It's long at 2hrs 18min and a bit slow early on and didn't really grab me... not helped by the bloody streaming service having a 2min ad break every 12mins or so! I hadn't watched anything on there before & probably won't again.

An astronaut crash lands on a mysterious planet only to discover he's not alone. Imdb

This sci-fi feature stars Adam Driver and comes from the team behing A Quiet Place. If only Adam HAD been alone, i.e with no camera crew. It would have saved them a lot of time & money - and saved me from ending up watching this bland dud of a movie.

BURNING (2018)

Jong-su bumps into a girl who used to live in the same neighborhood, who asks him to look after her cat while she's on a trip to Africa. When back, she introduces Ben, a mysterious guy she met there, who confesses his secret hobby. Imdb

Well I stuck with this Korean thriller/drama for the full 2hrs 28mins as it had been raved about and described by many critics as Writer/director/producer Lee Chang-Dong's masterpiece. It didn't grab me in the same way - it was okay, a bit slow to get going then the plot got more intriguing and I had no idea where it was going. The 3 leads are all fine.

ROADS (2018)

A young man from the Congo in search of his brother attempts to cross Europe's borders. In Morocco, he teams up with a sharp-witted British runaway who pinched his stepfather's recreational vehicle in order to escape from a family holiday. On their journey, the disparate duo have to make decisions that will also influence the lives of others. Imdb

I was pointed to this as one the two leads is Fionn Whitehead (from the excellent 1917). Stephane Bak is the other and they are really good in this gem of a movie. Ok so it's a little clunky as it moves from a charming; funny; buddy movie/road movie to more serious themes but I really liked it.

An American film from 2021: AMERICAN UNDERDOG

The inspirational true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi), who went from a stockboy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback. The film centers on Warner's unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed his aspirations to become an NFL player, but just when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only with the support of his wife Brenda (Anna Paquin) and the encouragement of his family, coaches, and teammates that he perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he already is. (IMDb)

I like so very much sport movies and most of all "inspired by true events". Although I didn't have understand American Football I like so much films with stories of this sport. And this film was simply great, amazing and it is the story of an extraordinary man who has a life motto: Do what you can do, till you can do what you want to do! If you should have the possibility to watch this film, please don't hesitate. You'll have a great evening!

KAJAKI (2014) a.k.a KILO TWO BRAVO

In September 2006, a 3 man patrol of british Paras sets off from their outpost overlooking Kajaki Dam in southern Afghanistan, to engage the Taliban. As they make their way across a dried out river bed one of them steps on a mine left from the Russian intervention some 25 years before. His colleagues rush to his aid only to find they are surrounded by mines and every move threatens serious injury or death. Imdb

This is based on true events and is a tense watch.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK (2022)

So with a nice piece of fish for dinner, washed down with a nice glass of New Zealand's finest Marlborough Sauvingnon Blanc I didn't want to end the evening by choosing a dud movie to go with the rest of the bottle so looked through the "keepers" folder and went for a re-watch of this. It can be tricky to come up with a sequel to a pretty much classic movie but I think they managed it. A plausible plot given the time between the 2 movies; those nods to the original classic film; the great soundtrack and cinematography, especially the the eye-popping flight sequencies. Add in the one-liners & those "get you right there moments" and the job is done.

I'm a fan of films from South-Korera or Japan. So there came across an action-comedy from Japan BABY ASSASSINS

Two high school girls receive orders from upper management to get "real" jobs, become roommates and blend into normal society. They also happen to be highly skilled assassins who don't like each other. After an unfortunate run-in with the violent Yakuza, they quickly learn they must band together to survive an epic fight for their lives. (IMDb)

That read and the 6,3 stars from 10 on IMDb and I wanted to watch it. What we did - but after 30 minutes my love said to me, if I will not stop this crap he will never speak a word with me. So I did!!! My advice to you is - if this film will cross your path, run as quick as you can away. It is an abuse of your intelligence! My impression is, that they have made this movie in an insane asylum together with the inmates!

You won't be rushing to see the recently released BABY ASSASSINS 2 then?

A HAUNTING IN VENICE (2023)

In post-World War II Venice, Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly attends a seance. But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer. Imdb

So this is the third outing for Kenneth Branagh's moustasche. Reviews were mainly very positive with most absolutely loving it, a few found it slow, dull and uninteresting.......... I fell asleep
