THE PASSENGER (2023) - no trailer, too many spoilers.

A man is forced to face his fears and confront his troubled past. He must find a way to survive when his co-worker snaps and goes on a violent killing spree. Imdb

At first you think, what is going on here? then at about 15 mins in it ramps up and then grips you and takes you on a trip. A tense trip punctuated with violence. It's a small scale/low budget movie but well directed and the 2 main leads Kyle Gallner & Johnny Bertold are really good.
Thank you for this tip. I'll try to get this film and watch it.

MY BROTHER THE DEVIL (2012)

Mo is a young boy growing up in a traditional Egyptian household, but beyond the front door of the family's modest London flat is a completely different world - the streets of Hackney. The impressionable Mo idolizes his handsome older brother Rashid and wants to follow in his footsteps. However, Rashid, a charismatic and shrewd member of a local gang, wants a different life for his little brother and deals drugs hoping to put Mo through college. One eventful summer, Rashid's sexual awakening forces Mo to confront his own fears and phobias and threatens to tear the brothers apart. Imdb

This inner-city London youth/gang/crime drama has been covered before but the 1st time director gets some good performances out her mainly unknown cast (although one, Letitia Wright you might recognise as the Wakanda tech & weapons expert). My biggest problem with it was the quality of the dialogue recording which was muffled at times, added to the Laaarrdann yoof slang .... innit like brov, nowarromean, ya get me?

FILTH (2013)

A corrupt, junkie cop with bipolar disorder attempts to manipulate his way through to a promotion in order to win back his wife and daughter while also fighting his own inner demons. Imdb

This is an adaptation of an Irvine Welch novel, stars James McAvoy; Jamie Bell; Eddie Marsan; Jim Broadbent; Martin Compston so on paper it should be worth a watch.... I was wrong, I switched off after 35 mins or so.

I've watched this film a long time ago --- but German dubbed - so I cannot say that they have spoken a bad slang! ;)

And here another film which was more than good THE BURIAL

Inspired by true events, when a handshake deal goes sour, funeral home owner Jeremiah O'Keefe (Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones) enlists charismatic, smooth-talking attorney Willie E. Gary (Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx) to save his family business. Tempers flare and laughter ensues as the unlikely pair bond while exposing corporate corruption and racial injustice in this inspirational, triumphant story. (IMDb)

And believe me "triumphant story" is very, very much understated. It is the fight David vs. Goliath. Jamie Foxx in one of his very best role. This was Oscar-worthy! Two hours from which you will say after the event: that have been the best two hours of your film-watching life!

THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING (2022) - no trailers 'coz they are really awful

A lonely scholar, on a trip to Istanbul, discovers a Djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Imdb

Now normally I wouldn't go for what I presumed would be a the Disney-style Alladin/genie in the lamp story - BUT I was nudged towards getting this as it stars Tilda Swinton (as the scholar) and Idris Elba (as the djinn). Anyway it turns out it ain't a disney-style movie. Although essentially it's a genie/bottle story it soon delves deeper into morality and the human pschye. Good cinamatography. The 2 leads are, as you would expect, excellent - sumptious soundtrack too, I enjoyed it.

Thank you! Now I think I'll be ready to watch this film as well - my thoughts have been the same like yours because of the "Aladin-lamp-story" which is not my cup of tea. But now I will try it.

VOYAGERS (2021)

A crew of astronauts on a multi-generational mission descend into paranoia and madness, not knowing what is real or not. Imdb

I grabbed this (even though I thought it was probably rubbish) because it stars Fionn Whitehead; Tye Sheridan and Colin Farrell. It is rubbish, essentially the plot is 86 year space-ark mission to colonise earth-like planet meets Lord Of The Flies. On the plus side it frees up more space on the usb, which I can fill up again now I've got around the blocked access I suffered.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE:DEAD RECKONING Part 1

Ethan Hunt and the IMF team must track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission -- not even the lives of those he cares about most. Imdb

I stopped watching the MI movies after No.3, I think it was, 'cos I was geetting fed up with the overuse of the latex face mask - every plot was "How do we get the plutonium; usb with all the secrets on; vial of biological nerve agent; nuclear launch codes from Michail; Estaban or whoever?" and the answer was always " I'll put on a face mask of a trusted friend and that will get me close to them" and I got bored with it but I thought I'd give this years release a watch. I nearly switched off early on when a face mask was ripped off though but stuck with it and all you would expect is here - the stunts; fights; car chases etc but imho they let it go flat in places and at 2hrs 45 it was too bloody long.

SOUND OF FREEDOM (2023) .. no trailer due to actor ages

The incredible true story of a former government agent turned vigilante who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hundreds of children from traffickers. After rescuing a young boy from ruthless child-traffickers, a federal agent learns that the boy's sister is still a captive and decides to embark on a dangerous mission to save her. With time running out, he quits his job and journeys deep into the Colombian jungle, putting his life on the line to free her from a fate worse than death. Imdb

This is not an easy watch (particularly the first half) but given the subject matter that's no surprise.

RETIREMENT PLAN (2023) .. no trailer due to actor ages

When Ashley and her young daughter Sarah get caught up in a criminal enterprise that puts their lives at risk, she turns to estranged father Matt, currently living the life of a retired beach bum in the Cayman Islands. Imdb

After last nights movie I wanted some thing lighter, something more like a dumb action/crime/comedy and this Nick Cage; Ron Pearlman; Erniie Hudson and Ashley Greene movie sort of fits the bill. Only sort of 'cos it's not that funny and some of the acting from the supporting cast is terrible, but then they are mostly stereotype stupid gangster thugs. If you want a disposable piece of popcorn cinema then this will do. I mean it's a Nic Cage movie so you know what you're gonna get.

GRAN TOURISMO (2023)

Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs - a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec - who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world. Imdb

My thanks to Shelter for recommending this movie. I have zero interest in motor-racing or gaming really so this was never going to be on my list. I really enjoyed this blast of a movie. The cast - David Harbour; Orlando Bloom; Archie Madekwe & Djimon Hounsou are all good, even Geri Halliwell! The cinematography is great, the race scenes are very well filmed. I knew nothing about the storyline and it is an astonishing one.

Recommended.

Joshua Stradokski plays one of the other drivers, Capa. It took me a while to workout where I has seen him before -

Scroll down and you will see why I remembered him ;)

MIDSOMMAR (2019)

A couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. Imdb

A deeply unsettling & creepy film - think M. Night Shyamalan meets Ingmar Berman meets David Lynch, It's beautifully filmed and the cast, lead by such as Florence Pugh; Jack Reynor; Will Poulter and Archie Madekwe (the gamer/driver from last nights Gran Turismo) are all good.

This disturbing piece of cinema is not gonna be for everyone but ....... you never know if it will grab you unless you give it a go

........................................................

In short: This is the oddest documentary about Sweden I have ever seen. ;););)

20th CENTURY WOMEN (2016)

Love, life, and the struggles of a mother bringing up a son in the late 70's. The ignorance of a free spirit against the needs of a young man trying to find his true character and beliefs. Living in a bohemian household shared with three like minded spirited people to help pay the rent, his mother tries to establish bonds that he cannot deal with. She cannot deal with his inability to talk, and enlists the help of other females in his life to share the burden of his upbringing. Slowly life unravels for them all without understanding how. In spite of their perceived struggles, they all go on to live defined lives without any serious consequences. (IMDb)

A nice and quiet film about coming-of-age. In the first 15 or 20 Minutes I've had to fight with myself if I really wanted to watch this film - but then I was drawn in. A wonderful mother-and-teen-son story. Great Annette Bening (mother) and the young Lucas Yade Zumann (son).

SONGS MY BROTHER TAUGHT ME (2015) .. no trailer due to actor age

With an older brother in jail and living with their single mother on Pine Ridge Reservation, Johnny and his sister Jashuan's lives develop new challenges when their absentee cowboy father suddenly dies. The loss prompts Johnny to strike out for Los Angeles, but would mean leaving behind his beloved sister. Imdb

So this is the debut from director Chloe Zhao and cinematographer Joshua Richards and who worked together again on The Rider and then Nomadland. This film is described as being in "naturalistic style" so looks more like a fly-on-the-wall documentary and the cast is pretty much made up of first timers too. It is beautifully filmed on the open plains of the Pine Ridge Reservation in Sth Dakota and has at at times a haunting soundtrack. Sadly I just couldn't get into this and had to give up after about 40mins. Maybe I was just in the wrong frame of mind - if the All4 free streaming service here in the UK don't take it offline I might try it again. Check put the trailer on Utube

A long time ago we watched SPOILER ALERT (2022) in the undubbed original version.

Based on Michael Ausiello’s best-selling memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies,” the film is a heartwarming, funny and life-affirming story of how Michael and Kit’s relationship is transformed and deepened when one of them falls ill.

Now we got a German dubbed version and we re-watched it. And again I cried my eyes out. If you haven't seen this film by now, please do it NOW! Very recommended! And it is the real film for these dark autumn evenings where you can cuddle with your love!

KILL BOKSOON (2023)

Single mother Kill Bok Soon is one of the world's deadliest assassins thanks to her 100% success rate on contract killings. Bok Soon works for M.K Ent, which is run by the man that taught her, Cha Min Kyo. Just before Kill Bok Soon was due to renew her contract, loyalties are put to the test when Bok Soon is involved in a kill or be killed incident. Imdb

This Sth Korean action-drama movie references a John Wick-style assassin - but this time she's also a single mother with a rebellious teen daughter. A bit slow paced early on, but gets a move on more in the 2nd half but at 2hrs 17mins they could have cut quite a bit out.

DREAM HORSE (2020)

Dream Alliance is an unlikely race horse bred by small-town Welsh bartender Jan Vokes. With no experience, Jan convinces her neighbours to chip in their meager earnings to help raise Dream in the hopes he can compete with the racing elites. Imdb.

Felling a bit knackered so wanted something non-taxing and spotted this on a streaming servce. It stars Damien Lewis; Toni Collette; Sian Phillips; Linda Baron & Karl Jenkins. If you have read the synopsis above you will be saying to yourself "I think I can guess how this goes, it will start off all okay then they will have a setback but in the end they will rise above the problems for a happy-ever-after ending." and you would be right. It's a feelgood movie, based on a true story.
