BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE (2000)

An idle part-time college lecturer is annoyed by the yapping sound of a nearby dog. He decides to take drastic action. Imdb

This popped up on a streaming service and I was interested as it is the directing debut of Bong Joon Ho - who went on to direct Parasite and Snowpiercer. This very much looks like a 1st film and I didn't like it much.

And again a re-watch. A long time ago we have watched THE INSPECTION (2022) in the english spoken original version. Now it came out here too German dubbed.

Inspired by Elegance Bratton's true story of being homeless for a decade after being kicked out of the house by his mother for being gay. When he joined the Marines, he needed to retrieve his birth certificate from his mother as depicted in the film. His mother passed away shortly after the film was greenlit but Gabrielle Union was allowed to wear some of her jewelry plus use the actual family Bible as a prop. (IMDb)

It has gone a long time since we have watched it. Now again. This film really is breathtaking! And the story is true! It is really one of the hardest movies I've ever seen. Boot Camp: in this movie this term unfolds its gritty face. I cannot and I will not understand such nasty treatment of young guys to make "men" out of them. Nevertheless this film is more than worth to watch and I would recommend it to all of you, because you can see: if you want something with all of your heart, you can and you will obtain it!

I saw this earlier this year and agree it is a very good film.

.............................................................................................

Strangely my movie tonight has echoes of THE INSPECTION as it's about someone with a troubled childhood who joins the Navy

ANTWONE FISHER (2002)

A sailor prone to violent outbursts is sent to a naval psychiatrist for help. Refusing at first to open up, the young man eventually breaks down and reveals a horrific childhood. Through the guidance of his doctor, he confronts his painful past and begins a quest to find the family he never knew. Imdb

I knew nothing about this but spotted it on my faithful All4 streaming service here in UK. It's a powerful true story and a dialogue-heavy movie, with excellent performances from the leads, Denzel Washington and Derek Luke. Denzel also directed (his debut) and the screenplay was written by Antone Fisher - based on his life.

Can't add a trailer due to actor age but here's a clip

BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL (2020)

A crew of hardy road workers, led by a bickering father and son, must survive the night when they accidentally awaken an ancient Irish vampire. Imdb

So it's described as a comedy horror but this low-budget Irish movie is not that scary and not that funny.

I finally watched Annabelle (2014). Suspenseful with some good jump scares. But in my opinion, the doll was probably the least terrifying part of the film.

THE GRAND SEDUCTION (2013)

The small harbor of Tickle Cove is in dire need of a doctor so that the town can land a contract to secure a factory which will save the town from financial ruin. Village resident Murray French (Gleeson) leads the search, and when he finds Dr. Paul Lewis (Kitsch) he employs - along with the whole town - tactics to seduce the doctor to stay permanently. Imdb

I didn't know anything about this Canadian movie when I spotted it on RaKuten Tv but seeing as how it stars Brendan Gleeson and Taylor Kitsch I thought I'd give it a go. The plot has echoes of Local Hero and so as you would expect it's a charming light comedy. Well I say comedy, ridiculously silly farce might be a better description. It's beautifully filmed against a Newfoundland backdrop and the cast are good. Nice soundtrack - and as with Michael Collins and The Banshees of Inisherin it gives Brendan the opportunity to show off his (real life) fiddle playing skills.

A film from Italy NUOVO OLIMPO (2023)

Late 1970s. They are young, beautiful and just 25 years old. They meet by chance and fall madly in love. An unexpected event, however, separates them. For thirty years they still pursue the hope of finding each other again, because they still love each other. (IMDb)

This is a bitter-sweet love story which I liked very much. It comprises a period of 30 years of searching a lost love. Perhaps with 111 minutes a little too long but nonetheless it is worth watching. Real love never will die!

ITS A BEAUTIFUL AFTERLIFE (2010) - no trailer due to actor age

A comedy centered on an Indian mother who takes her obsession with marriage into the world of serial murder. Imdb

From the team that made "Bend It Like Beckham". It stars Sanjeev Bhaskar; Shabana Asmi; Jimi Mistry & Zoe Wanamaker but sadly it's a bit of a mess

"Close". Heartbreaker. Movie about two very close 13 year old friends. Made cry a little. Available here in US only as a download. Don't want to disclose any more of the plot.
So correct! It is one of the very best movies for me. "Made cry a little"? My tears really couldn't stop! This film is really very recommended!

OPERATION RAINFALL (2020)

Two years into an intergalactic invasion of earth, survivors in Sydney, Australia, fight back in a desperate ground war. As casualties mount by the day, the resistance and their unexpected allies, uncover a plot that could see the war come to a decisive end. With the Alien invaders hell-bent on making earth their new home, the race is on to save mankind. Imdb

This was another movie I spotted on Raku tenTV and so (along with a few others) I saved it to my list on the basis that even though the writers strike is over the actors strike still goes on so eventually there will be a big gap with no new Hollywood movies getting released and by watching these others I can save the good stuff already on my USB. It's a good logical plan - apart from the fact that some, like this one, will turn out to be utter rubbish. The special effects have had some money spent on them - just that the script and acting quality is bleeding awful.

Kuolleet lehdet aka Fallen Leaves (2023)

In modern-day Helsinki, two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar....

The most consistent filmmaker working today might be Aki Kaurismäki, the Finnish master who produces a soft-spoken and mordant comedy every six years or so and never, ever misses the mark. Even by his high standards, Fallen Leaves is close to perfect. 💌

WILD CARD (2015)

When a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal skills and a gambling problem gets in trouble with the mob, he has one last play...and it's all or nothing. Imdb

So this is a Jason Staham movie... need to know any more? No of course you don't. As it's set in Vegas there is not so much "Leave it aaarrrt" cockney wide-boy patter as in many others. There is very little plot and the gambling scenes get a bit tedious to be honest but the rest of the time it's no brain required to enjoy the very much slappy; kicky; punchy; stabby; headbutty; hitty; karate-choppy moments.
