5 DAYS OF WAR (2011)

A drama set centered around the war between Russia and Georgia, and focused on an American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native who become caught in the crossfire. Imdb

So this is a well-meaning " war is hell but I'm a reporter and have to show the world the truth" movies but ends up looking more like a Micheal Bay action movie at times. Stars Rupert Friend; Val Kilmer; Richard Coyle & Kenneth Cranham.... plus Andy Garcia as the Georgian President

OPPENHEIMER (2023)

The story of American scientist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. Imdb

What I knew about this story, and the characters in it, would have been just enough for a GH "They All Died in..... " It would have had just 2 or 3 sentences saying things like the father of the atomic bomb; manhattan project and referenced the Sanskrit text about being the Destroyer Of Worlds. I am presuming that this movie, directed by Christopher Nolan, is following the facts of the matter? If so what a story it is! I knew nothing of the political manouverings going on behing the scenes. The movie is 3 hrs long but doesn't drag at all, even though it is intense and dialogue heavy. It has a stella cast - Cillian Murphy; Emily Blunt; Matt Damon; Kenneth Branagh ... and an initially unrecognisable (it took me over 55 mins to realise) Robert Downey Jnr

Highly recommended

CROSSFIRE (2012) a.k.a. FREELANCERS

The son of a slain NYPD officer joins the force, where he falls in with his father's former partner and a team of rogue cops. Imdb

You might think that a movie starring Robert De Niro & Forest Whitaker would be worth watching as they are two fine actors. Sadly the script is crap and 50 Cent also stars and he is terrible - as is the movie. I think I did well to stick with it for 25 mins before hitting the Off button. I wonder if they changed the title hoping people might not realise and go and see it.

A film from 2015 ASHBY

ASHBY is a coming of age/approaching death comedy drama. A seventeen-year-old kid (Ed) trying to understand who he wants to be in the world, befriends a terminally ill ex-CIA contract killer (Ashby) who is trying to make peace with his life and God before he goes. 'Making peace' might just entail killing three old bosses who have tricked him into breaching his strange moral code. (IMDb)

Hey Slimjim, I think and believe that you wouldn't press the off button during this film. At first I didn't want to watch it because one of the lead actors was Mickey Rourke. But I must ask his forgiveness. In this film he was GREAT. A film about an highschool youngster and an old, grumpy man! Both will learn something from the other one. Very recommended!

ACTS OF VIOLENCE (2018)

At a bachelorette party in a nightclub, the bride tells 2 guys offering blow to go away. They abduct her. The groom's 2 big brothers looked after their kid brother as kids and do so now again as veterans, "looking" for her and the 2 guys. Along the way, they team up with Avery, a cop investigating human trafficking and fighting the corrupted bureaucracy that has harmful intentions. Imdb

Well the stereotypical cop (world weary; too old for this crap; bit of a drink problem etc etc) is played by Bruce Willis and he is the only actor in it. There are others appearing infront of the camera but they are just reading out the teriible dialogue, it sure ain't acting.

Avoid this one - I wish I had.

SERAPHIM FALLS (2006)

After the end of the American Civil War, a former Confederate colonel hunts down a former Yankee officer with whom he has a grudge. Imdb

This has Liam Neeson as the hunter and Pierce Brosnan as his prey but it ends up as a poor attempt to recreate one of those classic westerns. At 1hr 52 mins it's 30mins too long - not that I saw the end.

THE MARVELS (2023)

Carol Danvers gets her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, forcing them to work together to save the universe. Imdb

I got a cam-copy of this, the print quality was watchable - the movie less so. At about 30 mins in one of the charaters shouts "What is going on?"...... I shouted back "Don't ask me" I stuck with it for another 25mins or so before realising I didn't care about it. Maybe you have to have watched all the different MCU TV series to make sense of it? I know it's a movie that has divided critics and audiences - some loved it, some hated it. I thought it was an incoherent mess. Is it up there with the last Ant-Man outing as one of the worst MCN movies? maybe even as bad as Eternals. Yes I think so

ASHBY (2015)

I didn't know about this movie so many thanks to Shelter for recommending it. And yes you are right I didn't need to use the Off button. I enjoyed this often funny, often bittersweet drama. The plot took directions I was not expecting, the 2 main leads were both great. I had only seen Nat Wollf once before where he starred in THE KILL TEAM (see post #12,480) and he was excellent in that.

two films this evening:
1. FISHERMAN'S FRIENDS from 2019

A fast living, cynical London music executive (Daniel Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he's pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate "fish out of water" as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he's drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he's forced to reevaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means. (IMDb)

2. FISHERMAN'S FRIENDS: ONE AND ALL from 2022

Following the unexpected success of the band's debut album "No Hopers, Jokers and Rogues", we re-join them almost a year later, struggling with the pressures, pitfalls and temptations of their newfound fame, second album syndrome, and performing on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury. (IMDb)

Both movies have been for us an extraordinary experience! Wonderful! Amazing! Recommended to everyone with great emotions. And Slimjim, my dear friend, it is my deepest and honest opinion that with both of these films you will break the cycle of bad and boring movies which will only steal your valuable life-time. Here you can laugh and cry and both together - and most of all: it is a true story! There is no action and no crime - only the love to chant!

FOE (2023)

Hen and Junior farm a secluded piece of land that has been in Junior's family for generations, but their quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger shows up at their door with a startling proposal. Imdb.

It has a cast of 3, mainly just Saoirse Ronan & Paul Mescal, and also Aaron Pierre and is a total bore. I thought it was awful - so far I haven't liked anything I've seen with Paul Mescal in so the new Gladiator movie's gonna have it's work cut out as he stars in that too.

I have watched a few bad/boring movies recently because I am saving the best 'til last. I have several (hopefully really good) movies like Shadow; Train To Busan 2; Sisu; Greyhound; Joyride; Asteroid City; The Burial; The Etruscan Smile; Reptile; Allelujah; Renfield; Plane; The Creator; The Great Escaper but I am keeping these Premier League ones back and mainly watching the 2nd or 3rd division ones like Foe and Crossfire so I can free up storage space for new titles. Every now and again I have to break my own plan and go for something like Oppenheimer though. Tomorrow night will definitely be a bottle of wine with one from the Premier League list.

Well it sort of does - but it doesn't really. The full title is Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula, it is from the same director/co-writer but it is a stand-alone movie set 4 years later and from what I have read doesn't feature any of the previous cast /characters.

The Imbd gives this plot summary "Peninsula takes place four years after the zombie outbreak in Train to Busan. The Korean peninsula is devastated and Jung Seok, a former soldier who has managed to escape overseas, is given a mission to go back and unexpectedly meets survivors"

Will it be as much of an ultrviolent, blood spattered adrenaline rush as the original? - probably not, but hopefully will still be a 2hr fun-ride.

SHADOW (2018)

In a Chinese royal court, an army commander secretly trains a "shadow" to retake a city against the wishes of the king. Imdb

This is an earlier film from genius chinese director/writer Yimou Zhang and yes I liked it - the cinematography was pretty impressive, the monochrome pallette, the Ying/Yang; black/white symbolism and the usual ballettic swordplay, but the plot was confusing and I didn't like it as much as HERO which had a more linear plot and was visually stunning. HERO is going to be one of my Xmas/New Year re-watches, an awesome film.

APOCALYPSE CLOWN (2023)

When a mysterious technological blackout plunges Ireland into anarchy and chaos, a group of failed washed up clowns are forced to traverse the country for one last shot at their dreams. Imdb

Ireland makes some very off-the-wall movies and this is certainly one of them. A wacko plot funny in a few places - but just too stupid for much of the running time. Still thats another 1.5Gb free on the usb storage. ;)

REPTILE (2023)

Tom Nichols is a hardened New England detective, unflinching in his pursuit of a case where nothing is as it seems and it begins to dismantle the illusions in his own life. Imdb

Benicio Del Toro stars along with Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone and boy does he star - it's a compelling and mesmerizing performance in this dark, brooding intense thriller. I grabbed this about 7 weeks back and had forgotten most of what I'd read or seen about it, apart from the fact that Del Toro was a cop and this I think is the best way to watch this, knowing very little so a short teaser clip rather than a spoiler filled trailer. Lots of people hated it - I was totally engrossed for it's 2hrs 16min runtime and it got under my skin. Recommended.

Well I passed over these movies when they came out but my thanks to Shelter for the recommendation. I watched the 1st one this evening and really enjoyed it. If (like me) sea-shanties are not your musical taste don't worry - it's not a problem in the movie. It's a delightfully heartwarming funny film. A perfect "feel-good" movie.

Shelter, I'm curious. As you prefer dubbed movies to subtitles I'm guessing you watched a dubbed version. And as the songs are so central to the film and the story did you hear them as sung in the film with the english lyrics and subtitled? or were they dubbed too
