Well I passed over these movies when they came out but my thanks to Shelter for the recommendation. I watched the 1st one this evening and really enjoyed it. If (like me) sea-shanties are not your musical taste don't worry - it's not a problem in the movie. It's a delightfully heartwarming funny film. A perfect "feel-good" movie.

Shelter, I'm curious. As you prefer dubbed movies to subtitles I'm guessing you watched a dubbed version. And as the songs are so central to the film and the story did you hear them as sung in the film with the english lyrics and subtitled? or were they dubbed too
yes I've watched a German dubbed version. It is very seldom that I'll take movies with subtitles. Mostly I watch movies in the evening and then I want only to have fun or tension. If you are reading AND watching something always will get lost.

But back to your question. The Shanties have been subtitled in the German version, so that you could follow them too. I think it wouldn't be possible or good if they would dubbing them. The original feeling would have been lost.

I think you know that my attitude towards subtitles and dubbing is the opposite. I just can't handle dubbing. I mean watching any movie with Sean Connery and hearing some swedish actor talking - no that's horrible.

And subtitles have always been a part of film culture in Sweden. I'm used to subtitles since early childhood.

I can understand both sides of the argument and I watch subbed films and also dubbed. Regarding this particular movie I was curious about what a dubbed version would do with the songs as they are so central to the plot and I thought dubbing them would probably ruin it but as Shelter has reported they left the english lyrics and added subtitles for them, which I think is the way to do it.

Gorgik9 I'll totally understand your opinion to dubbing films. But in Germany, Austria, Switzerland (German part) there it is usual that foreign films will be dubbed. No one (or better very, very few) would go into a film which is in original language. So I'm or better all of my fellow countrymen are used to dubbed films since early childhood.

TIME TO HUNT (2020)

In hopes of escaping a dystopian city and a chance at a new life, four friends with nothing to lose plan a casino heist. But what seemed like a bulletproof plan turns into a chase for their lives when they fall prey to a mysterious hunter who wants them dead. Imdb

This a Korean action thriller, it starts of slowly but soon ramps up the action and the tension. An entertaing watch for it's 2hr 14min runtime.

FISHERMAN'S FRIENDS: ONE AND ALL (2022)

Following the success of their first album, the Fisherman's Friends struggle to adjust to their new-found fame and work towards a second album. Imdb

Well I liked it - but, like many sequels it couldn't match the original and wasn't quite as much fun as the 1st one.

BUTCHERS CROSSING (2022)

An Ivy League drop-out travels to the Colorado wilderness, where he joins a team of buffalo hunters on a journey that puts his life and sanity at risk. Imdb

This Nicholas Cage movie is a kind of western - a visceral, broody, slow paced, unforgiving and at times bloody old western. It's beautifully shot with an atmospheric sountrack to match. The leads are all great but Nicholas Cage is really good, turning down his more usual zany over-the-top performances and going for a perfect quiet, introspective performance. Worth a watch.

THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY
The story of Harold Fry's 500 mile walk from Devon to the English border with Scotland is well translated to the big screen by director Hettie MacDonald in this low key but very watchable film. When retired Brewery manager Harold (Jim Broadbent) receives a letter from an old work colleague that she is dying in a hospice at the the other end of the country in Berwick-upon-Tweed, he writes a letter. However feeling it is not enough, he cannot bring himself to post it and, after talking to a shopgirl in a petrol station, decides on the spot to walk to see her, leaving his wife Maureen (Penelope Wilton) sick with worry and frantic about being on her own. As Harold makes his way up north his 'Pilgrimage' starts to become public knowledge and he soon attracts a following on both social media and then the headline news. On the journey he meets an assortment of characters, from a well meaning and helpful Slovakian woman, a woman on a farm, a stranger at a railway station, a pill popping confused 18 year old, a stray dog and a small following of people who want to join his pilgrimage. And as Harold makes his journey we start to learn that his life and relationship with Maureen is not as boring as it seems, for beneath the surface he is masking a terrible tragedy and a fractured relationship. (IMDb)

A great, little but very compelling film. There is no action - the action is Harold. And Jim Broadbent acts unforgettable as "Harold"! For a quiet evening a deeply moving story of charitable love. Recommended!

I'm happy to read your review as I have had a copy for a while but not watched it yet. It is one of those I saved in my premier league list, while tending to watch those in my divison 1 list.

DUMB MONEY (2023)

David vs. Goliath tale about everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (the video game store) into the world's hottest company. Imdb

So if you have an understanding of Wall Street; short selling and hedge funds this might be the movie for you... if you are a bit flaky on these issues then you might find following this plot a little complicated. Paul Dano; Pete Davison; Seth Rogen; America Ferrera; Nick Offerman & Clancy Brown star.

From time to time Hollywood decides to document recent commercial/business stories and although you might think it will end up being dry any uninteresting sometimes it ends up (like Air - about the trainer wars) being an enteraining watch. I'm afraid I didn't find this so entertaining

THE HOLDOVERS (2023)

(Just a teaser clip as trailer gives too much away)

A curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them, a damaged brainy troublemaker. and with the school's head cook who has just lost a son in Vietnam.

This is a thoughtful funny but melancholic movie with an intelligent script and story - told at a laidback pace. It might be too laidback for some though. It's nicely shot and the perfomances from the 3 main leads Paul Giamatti; Da'Vine Joy Randolph & newcomer Dominic Sessa are just superb. This could become the classic Christmas heartwarming feel-good movie.

I share the same thoughts as you! ;)

I really enjoyed this movie and it has stayed in my head most of today. A contender in the awards? I think maybe yes. I would not be surprised if it got nominations in Best Film; Screenplay; Director and actor awards for all 3 leads. I don't think either the Oscars; G.Globes or BAFTA have a specific Best Acting Newcomer, but if there was Dominic Sessa would be a shoe-in. He is really good, and this is his first movie. Up to being spotted at a audition session at the school he attended (one used in the movie) he had just done a few school plays.

RETRIBUTION (2023)

A bank executive receives a bomb threat while driving his children to school that his car will explode if they stop and get out. Imdb

Well regarding my last 2 movie choices ".. from the sublime to the ridiculous..." is a phrase that comes to mind. This Liam Neeson film is just dumb. It has too many holes in the preposterous plot; terrible bits of dialogue.... think that old Keanu Reeves/Sandra Bullock "Speed" - but without the charm, tension or style.

PUNCH (2022)

Jim is a teenage boxer in a small town. He's a golden boy, preparing for a fight that will elevate him to an early professional status but his father Stan is a demanding coach and a notorious alcoholic. As Jim begins to rethink why he is fighting, his life tangles with Whetu, a razor-tongued, gay Maori boy who spends his days in an old shack with his dog Moimoi where he cobbles together a fragile glamour and dreams of leaving town to become a musician. Jim and Whetu must navigate isolation, hypocrisy, the brutality of small-town boxing, and an anonymous queer bashing that no one will talk about. As Jim stumbles towards discovering what it really is to be a gay man, he is forced to understand that strength has little to do with heroism. Imdb

So this New Zealand/Kiwt sort of gay-coming-of age set against the testosterone fueled world of amateur boxing covers the cliches you would expect. But the main leads are good (Tim Roth plays father & trainer Stan) in many places there is a lot of quiet introspection with little dialogue and the New Zealand beach and forest backdrop means there's some great cinematography.

It would be interesting for me as well. So I searched and found it - but only in English; but further searching gave me English subtitles. So I will try it in the next days.

Hi Slimjim - this evening we watched it. It is really not a big action or sport burner - but nonetheless a movie we liked. The actors - both young men and the father - played convincingly their parts. Who was winner, who was looser? Life isn't always fair - isn't it?!

PIG (2021)

A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregon wilderness must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped. Imdb

I knew of this movie but had never seen it and today I spotted this on the All4 streaming service here in UK and took the opportunity to watch it. I liked it. It has a subdued performance from Nick Cage who shines in this slow burner of a movie.
