AS I AM (2019) a.k.a. PHILOPHOBIA

Set in the English countryside, As I Am depicts small town adolescence. One week of school remains for Kai, an aspiring writer, and his friends. How they spend this time will cost one of them their life and leave them changed forever. Imdb

So another movie on a free streaming service. The reviews were favourable but I thought it was slow paced and one or two of the young cast were not that good. I ended up watching the last 45 mins by using the f/forward button in the hope it got better. It didn't.

This streamer (Rakut3nTv) always has 7 adverts in each ad break, for this movie they had the same Lego ad repeated 3 times in the same ad break. So maybe forget review ratings and R0ttenTomato scores and judge a movie by what's in the first ad break?

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022). Reminded me of the Netflix series Sense8.
Terrific movie!
...............................................................................

ENDER'S GAME (2013)

Young Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, an insectoid alien race who had previously tried to invade Earth and had inflicted heavy losses on humankind. Imdb

I hadn't seen this for a while but it was also on my free streamer. Harrison Ford; a young Asa Butterfield; Viola Davis & Ben Kingsley star in this entertaining sci-fi action movie that has a pretty good storyline and poses a few moral questions along the way.

This time the ads were for Rolex watches; Nissan E-cars; a coming-soon Netflix movie; Hilton Hotels & Virgin Airlines.

Again a courtroom drama with a true story: BRIAN BANKS (2018)

The inspirational true story of Brian Banks (Aldis Hodge), an All-American high school football star committed to USC who finds his life upended when he is wrongly convicted of a crime he didn't commit. Despite lack of evidence, Banks is railroaded through a broken justice system and sentenced to a decade of prison and probation. Years later, with the support of Justin Brooks (Greg Kinnear) and the California Innocence Project, Banks fights to reclaim his life and fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL. (IMDb)

The breathtaking story of a young black man, erroneously blamed by a belied girl to be a rapist! And his fight to be a free man again who can live his dreams. Very recommended.

BAAHUBALI : THE BEGINNING (2015)

(The rock music in the trailer is NOT used in the movie)

A child from the Mahishmati kingdom is raised by tribal people and one day learns about his royal heritage, his father's bravery in battle and a mission to overthrow the incumbent ruler. Imdb

So this is an earlier movie from the same director; cinematographer and writers that in 2022 brought us RRR. This is a full on Indian cinematic epic, It's a love story; a good vs. evil story; a melodrama about a baby cheated of his birthright and about revenge. There's losts of blood; elephants; an awesome waterfall; lots of singing, some dancing; a full on 25min+ battle scene and all in just 2hrs 39mins. I know what you're thinking, that seems a little short for a Telugu movie? - well this is only the first half (the clue is in the title) but the film dosen't drag at all...... 2hrs 48mins for Pt2. so maybe tomorrow.

It's an very entertaining movie. I don't think this was as good as RRR but to be fair it would have to be fecking awesome to come close to that wonderful but totally insane crazy epic. Catch it in N3tflix

BAAHUBALI: THE CONCLUSION (2017)

Upon listening to a narrative of his parents' love story and the treachery that led to his father's death, Shiva, the son of Bahubali, must claim his place as the rightful heir to the throne of the Mahishmati Kingdom, but first, he must avenge the injustice committed against his parents and people. iMDB

So this Pt.2 is definitely slower than Pt.1, there does get to be some action at times but overall it's not as much fun to watch as the first half being much more of a traditional Indian melodrama with more of a Disney Alladin/Arabian Nights feel to it - having said that when it takes on Disney it does it really well. Check out this section

S.W.A.T ( 2003)

Hondo Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits Jim Street (Colin Farrell) to join an elite unit of the Los Angeles Police Department. Together they seek out more members, including tough Deke Kay (LL Cool J) and single mom Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez). The team's first big assignment is to escort crime boss Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez) to prison. It seems routine, but when Montel offers a huge reward to anyone who can break him free, criminals of various stripes step up for the prize, including Gamble (Jeremy Renner).

This popped up on a free streamer with a 5 day window to watch before it dissappears. Looking at the cast list you'd expect/hope it to be a good watchable entertaining action thriller?.... Sadly it's rubbish, one to avoid.

MENDING THE LINE (2022)

A Marine wounded in Afghanistan is sent to a V.A. facility in Montana where he meets a Vietnam Vet who teaches him how to fly fish as a way of dealing with his emotional and physical trauma. (IMDb)

An amazing and very touchingly film about three injured souls and how they find together back their inner peace. A moving and very pathetic story you shouldn't miss to watch. Brilliant Brian Cox, Perry Mattfeld and most of all Sinqua Walls!

THE RIDER (2017)

After suffering a near fatal head injury, a young cowboy undertakes a search for new identity and what it means to be a man in the heartland of America. Imdb.

This is another early film from Chloe Zhao who went on to direct Nomadland but sadly I found it slow and dull. I might have been confused that a keyword for the movie was "bareback"... turns out it refered to bareback horse riding 😥

BLUE BEETLE (2023)

An alien scarab chooses Jaime Reyes to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the recent college graduate with a suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle. Imdb

Critics loved it, going on about how it's a super-hero movie but one grounded in a solid family. I thought the plot was pretty lame with the usual one dimensional characters - the evil corporation destroying everything standing in the way of them getting "the ultimate weapon" ... and I thought the family were all really frigging annoying.
...............

(edit) I just spotted the title of a review on Imdb: A 127 min movie that's 90 mins too long. 😀

A challenge for the movie experts, please help me find the name of this film. Made circa late sixties somewhere bleak like Poland or Russia, starts with the man who lives with his mother, they have a job ironing and packing shirts. He goes out to buy cigarettes but meets a friend and goes for a ride in his car, which has a record player that plays 7 inch discs, not very practical when you have to swop the record every three minute. They pick up two women along the way and find themselves at a drunken wedding on a ship. Somehow he makes it back home where his mom is waiting patiently, not worried at what took him so long.
Any clues? It's a hard one.

Re-watched HEREDITARY (2018). Directed by Ari Aster.
A grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.

You can watch this movie several times (if you can bear the mental anguish) and see or hear something new each time.
For those of you who have already seen it, you can click this link to see how several other viewers reacted to one of the
most crucial scenes in the film. Don't click here if you haven't seen it yet.

TOP SECRET (1984)

I had a crap day involving hopsitals so was definitely in the mood for something light; frothy and silly so this WWII/French Resistance parody from the team behind AIRPLANE and starring Val Kilmer; Omar Sharif; Jim Carter & Peter Cushing was perfect

Yeah all is fine thanks. Just a few hours having repeat scans and tests - sitting in a treatment section on an intraveneous drip for an hour was fun (not). More tests and blood samples due next week too - more fun!

THE COMMUTER (2018)

An insurance salesman/ex-cop is caught up in a life-threatening conspiracy during his daily commute home. Imdb

So a streamer here in the UK has a couple of Liam Neeson movies uploaded for a few days so i thought I'd give them a go. This one starts of a bit slow as it sets up the scenario.. Then at about 30mins in it gets much more interesting but sadly then just turns into " just another Liam Neeson movie" and I got bored with it and switched off.

UNKNOWN (2011) No trailer - best to watch it (like I did) without seeing one as it gives too much away.

When a man awakens from a coma only to discover that someone has taken on his identity, he teams up with a young woman to prove who he is. Imdb

This is the other Liam Neeson movies on that streaming service and much better i.m.h.o than yesterdays offering. It starts off slowly then at about 25mins in there's the first WTF? moment, soon followed by a few more. The intrigue and action ramps up as it rolls along. Corny ending 😂

ALIVE (2020)

The rapid spread of an unknown infection has left an entire city in ungovernable chaos, but one survivor remains alive in isolation. It is his story. Imdb

This is a Korean horror/thriller movie. It's a lot of fun, in a blood covered violent cannibals kind of way, but with a few subtle diversions from the usual zombie movie. It stars Yoo Ah-in who was also very good in BURNING.
