Spinning Gold 2023
The story of the Casablanca record label which gave us Kiss, Donna Summer, Parliament, Village People and many others. You don't get the actual performers, they are all actors but pretty good likenesses. If like me you are interested in the music then do watch it. For everyone else there is nothing here to make it worthwhile.

SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012)

Three magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified advertisement seeking a companion for time travel. (Imdb)

It was Ok, the performances were fine - and it was interesting to see what Deadpool's taxi driver was doing before he got that job.

NIGHT IN PARADISE (2021)

Escaping from the fury of a rival gang to Jeju Island, Tae-gu thinks he’s just there to lay low until things blow over. But things are never that simple in the underworld, and he soon finds that his actions have consequences—one that threatens to follow him to the refuge he’s found with his new friend on the verge of death.

So as you might have guessed from the synopsis above we are in Korean double-crossing blood splattered revenge territory. A little bit of editing would have helped as in places it gets a bit slow but other than that an OK movie.

Hello Slimjim,
thank you soooo much for your recommandation of R R R - RISE ROAR REVOLT.

Just some minutes ago the film was over and both of us we are stunned! First I must say that I'm not a fan of Indian movies. All of them are too long for my taste. And then all the way through these films the continual dancing and singing - no it wasn't my cup of tea. So I have hesitated a long time to watch this one with its 3 hours!

But I can only recommend it now. Yes there is as well the typical singing and dancing - but without it, it wouldn't be right!
Rama and Bheema you are real heroes and we liked the (sometimes excessive) action. All in all it was a wonderful movie evening!
Once more: many thanks to you Slimjim!

I know what you mean about the hesitation - a 3 hour subtitled Indian melodrama/action movie with singing/dancing?! Not sure that's going to be a good choice of film.... but as it turns out the 3 hrs just fly by as the spectacle on screen with it's totally bonkers over-the-top plot and incredible visuals blows the viewer away. I will be giving it a re-watch soon I think.

Glad you liked it!

PRIMER (2004)

Intellectual engineers Aaron (Shane Carruth) and Abe (David Sullivan) build and sell error-checking technology with the help of their friends Robert (Casey Gooden) and Phillip (Anand Upadhyaya). But when Aaron and Abe accidentally invent what they think is a time machine, Abe builds a version capable of transporting a human and puts the device to the test. As the two friends obsess over their creation, they discover the dark consequences of their actions.

I couldn't get into this and gave up early. As you can see from the trailer it's low budget and the result is a lacklustre production style plus the script was incoherent and acting not great.

THE MACHINE (2023)

Bert Kreischer rose to fame as a stand-up comedian known as The Machine, and in his signature set he recounts his true experience with Russian mobsters while on a booze-soaked college trip. Now, 23 years later, that trip has come back to haunt him as he and his estranged father (Mark Hamill) are kidnapped back to Russia by the mob to atone for something they say he did.........

I'm not sure which site's algorithym suggested I would like this but gee was it wrong. I have never heard of this comedian and even if I was a fan this movie is pretty terrible, I think I did well to stick it for 30mins or so before hitting the off button.

OUR DAY WILL COME (2010)

The outcast red-haired teenager Rémy is bulled at school and lives with his estranged mother and sister in France. The also red-haired psychiatrist Patrick befriends Rémy and helps him to release his repressed hatred and sexuality. When Rémy sees a picture of red-haired people in Ireland, he forces Patrick to travel with him to his dreamland. Imdb

I was pointed towards this as the director also made ATHENA which I watched a few weeks back and really liked (see post #12,444) This one was not so enjoyable, the 2 main leads Vincent Cassel and Oliver Barthelemy put in good performances but the movie is a strange roadmovie/drama that decends into a violent disturbing ramgage.

THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER (2018)

Tyler Burnside is a Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad. Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives in: the unsolved murders in which ten women were brutally tortured and killed by a psychopath known as Clovehitch, which rocked the community more than a decade ago. When Tyler discovers a cache of disturbing images in his father's possession, he begins to suspect that the man he trusts most in the world may be Clovehitch, and that his deadly rampage may not be over. Imdb

It has some great reviews but I couldn't get into this and gave up on it. Maybe you have to be in the right mood for it?

My recent movie choices haven't exactly turned out to be good ones - but at least I'm freeing up more space on the usb drive.

This film is in my collection as well. Now I'm uncertain: shall I watch or not?

A film from 2022 from South-Korea: HUNT

The International Unit and The Domestic Unit of the Korean Spy Agency are tasked with the mission of uncovering a North Korean Spy known as Donglim who is deeply embedded within their agency. (IMDb)

An action packed story but... (I'll say it with the word of a reviewer on IMDb):
Saw this in the cinema today. The movie is entertaining throughout, never short of action but both me and my friends are confused about the plot and what really happened. I think complicated story telling is not a good thing, it means the director has failed to explain something to the viewer. We were all not entirely sure what actually happened.

Nevertheless a good actioner! But perhaps it is too because all the Korean, Chinese and Japanese actors are lookiong for me similar. Very often in these films I've the problem to know who is who!

Give it a go! It was probably not in the right mood for it and should have gone for a shootie/slappy/punch-up movie with Gerrard Butler; Liam Neeson or Denzel Washington (or watched RRR or HERO again)

NOPE (2022)

After random objects falling from the sky result in the death of their father, ranch-owning siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood attempt to capture video evidence of an unidentified flying object with the help of tech salesman Angel Torres and documentarian Antlers Holst. ( Imdb)

So I enjoyed GET OUT and so thought that another movie from writer/director Jordan Peele and lead actor Daniel Kaluuya should be worth a watch. Was it? Errrr Nope.... I was disappointed. The cast were fine, the cinematography was pretty good for most of it but I thought the pace was slow in places and the plot incoherent and confusing.

DOG (2022)

Two former Army Rangers are paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Army Ranger Briggs (Channing Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois dog) buckle into a 1984 Ford Bronco and race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to LuLu's handler's funeral on time. Along the way, they'll drive each other completely crazy, break a small handful of laws, narrowly evade death, and learn to let down their guards in order to have a fighting chance of finding happiness. (Imdb)

Want an entertaining feel-good movie with a few laughs along the way on a cold wet Sunday evening? Welll this one should fit the bill

THE KILL TEAM (2019)

A young American soldier in Afghanistan is disturbed by his commanding officer's behavior and is faced with a moral dilemma. When he witnesses other recruits killing civilians under the direction of the sadistic sergeant, he begins to fear that the men he's serving with might be the ones to kill him.... (Imdb)

This movie from A24 is pretty intense. Good performances from the cast, including Nat Wolff; Adam Long; and Rob Morrow, and the charismatic staff sargeant is played by Alexander Skarsgård. It's a gripping watch and made all the more so as it is based on true events. When I went to Ytub for the trailer I saw there is a documentary with the same name covering the same material and that was made by the director/writer of this movie (Dan Krauss) so it looks like this is not one of those "loosely based on...." but is a cinematic adaptation of testimonies taken from those who were actually there.
