Favorite punk singer is Mike Ness. Though I love listening to Macy gray, Aretha Franklin, Enya, Loreena McKennett, Alicia Keys, and Nora Jones for my top female vocalists.
Can you explain that? I'm not a big fan but of the dozen or so opera CDs I have, Callas is on 4/5 of them. All bought on the advice of older, more knowledgeable, friends. She sounds like a fishwife. Maybe it's the old recordings. I prefer Birgit Nilsson.
As for non-classical? Love her or despise her, I like Amy Winehouse.
Despite being an old fart, probably older than most of the members here, I like pretty much all the singers they've mentioned. These days, Lady GaGa is really interesting, Amy Winehouse has balls. Maria Callas was the toast of the town in opera at one time, however I preferred Nelly Melba. Hearing her old recordings, even with the poor quality of audio back then, gives me goosebumps. If you can find it, her performance of Lucia di Lammermoor is incredible. Joni Mitchell has some of the most heart-rending lyrics around.

If we are talking classical, you would have to nominate Joan Sutherland, who recently died, as possibly the voice of the (20th) century. She also sang in Lucia de Lammermoor, in fact that was the performance that brought her to stardom.
New Zealand soprano Kiri te Kanawa is also very good, though probably not in the same league as Dame Joan. She has also made forays into popular music; she appears on two soundtrack albums that I own, West Side Story and South Pacific.
Of course with out a dought, Madonna would be my top pick. Then Bjork. Starsalior, Tegan and Sara, Linkin Park, Chester the lead singer is so hot. And I can not forget Garbage,Passion Pit, Zero 7, Goldfrapp, and The Cure.
