Anyone looking forward to the summer Olympics?

Countries are unveiling their uniforms and as usual they range from inspiring to what-were-they-thinking?

So far, I think the Brits are definitely in the inspiring camp thanks to Stella McCartney's designs.

When I was younger I used to really look forward to the Olympics. Now that it seems like it's just another corrupt institution pandering to the monied elite, I find it really difficult to get excited about the games. I'm sure for the athletes competing there it is still the thrill of a lifetime and they deserve every accolade that they get. I just get a bit turned off by people who are in charge of these things using this to pander to the voting public. Sure there's always an element of political propaganda in an international sporting event, and that's not necessarily a bad thing (I would rather propaganda than war), but I would really like to see the Olympics return to the exploits of the athletes, rather than the political, social and economic conditions of the host country.

I still think there's so much potential there to turn the games around. I also really like when people get excited about teams and individuals who are competing.

btw - super photo!!

All those beautiful mem competing in obscure sports. You only see them a few times in their careers.
And since they only have a few days to become famous...naked images on the internet!

From Slate Magazine:

"Stella McCartney’s swim brief, designed in cahoots with Adidas, is a study in minimalist grandeur. It is made of a gigantic block of swimsuit material from which McCartney, like Michelangelo before her, hacked away everything that wasn’t Tom Daley’s groin."

Ralph Lauren has unveiled only the USA Closing Ceremonies outfits so far.

Hmmm... So far they are too preppie / yacht club for my taste. And what's with the giant Polo logo on the front - shouldn't that be a flag or something rather than a RL advertisement?

Very cool shoes! German feet looking great :thumbs up:

But the best uniform - the best and the most truly ancient Greek - for his Royal British Cuteness would be: Birthdaysuite :thumbs up: Tommy-in-the-Nudie ;)

I am in total agreement with James, the modern olympics has become an orgy of exploitation and waste.
Thousand of people lose their homes to make way for extravagant buildings that only get fully used for a few weeks. With today's technical systems there is no need for every event to take place on the same site. Video links can connect any town to any city to any country. Locating each event in a place which utilises pre existing facilities offers a gigantic cost saving. A dispersed games is a less attractive target for terrorism.
Most importantly this would turn the emphasis away from nationalistic willy waving and back towards sport.

This is the best and most correct statement to this theme I've ever read! :thumbs up:

Oh, boy - Ralph Lauren's Christmas jumpers for the Sochi Olympics! All they were missing was reindeer across the back.

All politicians go on about the Legacy - well if I ever get the crazy idea that I should go and buy running shorts, an exercise bike or gym membership I order a pizza, open a bottle and watch the best bits of London 2012 - the great Danny Boyle opening ceremony that is - until I calm down

Since posting I see that you cannot watch it here, but click on the Y.Tube icon on the info bar and you casn watch it there

Great ariel shots of London, Kenneth Branagh, the Pandemonium section with an Underworld soundtrack, a parachuting Queen and James Bond, Mr. Bean, Mike Oldfield, Prodigy, Dizzy Rascal, Eurythmics etc ( lots of atheletes wandering about for a while, but you can skip/fast forward this bit ), Mohammed Ali, Seb Coe droning on (best to skip through that too) The Cauldron, fireworks to Pink Floyd and Paul MacCartney - it would have been better not to have let him sing Hey Jude though, he should have just sang the last verse of The End.

Brazil, my favourite destination for extended visits, mostly for its natural beauty and the beauty of its music and fun loving people. I hope that the preparations for this Summer Olympic clean up most of its polluted water ways and decrepit sewage system. Visitors should not have to leap over busted sewer pipes in the downtown area and they should not have to catch their breath after crossing the stinky body of water on their way to the Rio airport. The preparations for the 2008 Summer Olympics yanked China into 21st century food hygiene and health promoting regulations. I hope this one does the same for Brazil as regards the conservation of its natural tourist attractions.

From Esquire mag:
By Jack Holmes
May 22, 2016

You might have thought the London Olympic organizers' decision to distribute 150,000 condoms to athletes in 2012 was a bit extreme, but it turns out that was just the beginning. The head honchos of this summer's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be handing out 450,000 prophylactics to the athletic specimens in attendance—enough, Quartz tells us, that each athlete could lay claim to 42 rubbers.

The prolific giveaway is primarily in response to the Zika virus outbreak throughout South America, a significant danger as a large section of the sporting world gathers in Brazil this year. The disease can be sexually transmitted, so the event's organizers are trying to get ahead of the risk.

It's going to be a busy summer.
