You might have thought the London Olympic organizers' decision to distribute 150,000 condoms to athletes in 2012 was a bit extreme, but it turns out that was just the beginning. The head honchos of this summer's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be handing out 450,000 prophylactics to the athletic specimens in attendance—enough, Quartz tells us, that each athlete could lay claim to 42 rubbers.
The prolific giveaway is primarily in response to the Zika virus outbreak throughout South America, a significant danger as a large section of the sporting world gathers in Brazil this year. The disease can be sexually transmitted, so the event's organizers are trying to get ahead of the risk.
It's going to be a busy summer.
