It is all behind us and the surprising take away for me is how I've lost my appetite for nationalist competition. The world is in such need of having its problems solved. Societies have need. The environment. Animal life. I watch the flags wave and I don't care at all.
I did enjoy the victories measured in the joy of people accomplishing their dreams. But it was painful to watch others fall short.
Maybe I'm turning into a sappy sentimentalist but I'd rather see the WORLD win. And if not the world, at the least some joy in the future of that Syrian boy pulled from the rubble of a Russian bombing run.
It's that, or we should start that mission to the next habitable earth-like planet now.

I have to admit, the Rio games turned out much better than I feared. No major catastrophe or further collapse of infrastructure. I still hope they find a way of stopping the inflow of untreated sewage into the Bay of Guanabara and other waterways in this beautiful country.
