Come To Rio For Olympic Fever! The Kind That Leads To Death For Half Those Infected.
By Dominic Gwinn -
June 14, 2016

The 2016 Rio Olympics are almost here, and Olympic fever is spreading! With symptoms that include blood infections, meningitis, and Hepatitis, it would seem like the Brazilian government isn’t the only thing in Rio that’s been corrupted by the spirit of the Olympics!

This year, as athletes from around the world set aside their politics and come together to compete in the greatest of athletic traditions, the world is finding out that it really is what’s on the inside that counts. Recent CDC reports have confirmed the presence of super bacteria in five of Rio’s beaches, including the Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botagofo, and Flamengo, with a separate study confirming the presence of super bacteria in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, and in a river that empties into Guanabara Bay, areas that are not just host to open-water and triathlon swimming events, but also showcase beaches for tourists. Because “Olympic glory” now means that everyone should suffer in the quest for the gold!

They're here! Congrats to Rio on a great opening. Best outfits? Brazil! The bold green/yellow prints under the navy jackets. Second would be France, I think. USA wasn't bad, but those huge Polo logos over the breast pocket - tacky. The Stella McCartney UK team outfits look lumpier than I expected.

Mens Gymnastics Qualifying Rounds

USMen_600.jpg

US Men's Gymnastic Team has gathered quite a few fans from their shirtless Instagram and Tumblr feeds.

Men's gymnastics qualifying round played out this afternoon. The teams going forward will be (in the order they finished):
  1. China
  2. US
  3. Russia
  4. Japan
  5. UK
  6. Brazil
  7. Ukraine
  8. Germany

Lots of drama today. US led the points until two athletes fell out of their pommel horse routines (which is how they lost in London). Still they were strong enough overall to stay in second place. The Chinese and Japanese lived up to their reputations for excellence under pressure.

Brazil did better than I have ever seen them - talk about peaking at the right time!

I am very happy to see the Russians allowed to compete. Their gymnastics team is always one of the best and have a clean reputation. It would have been unfair to turn them away for the sins of the other Russian teams.

Tragically, French gymnast Samir Ai broke his leg coming out of the vault. Germany's Andreas Toba injured his leg (torn ACL) during his free exercise and could not complete the routine. However he came back to do his pommel horse routine and scored high enough to earn Germany the final slot in the team competition.

Although they didn't make it through the qualifying round as a team, Netherlands scored some excellent individual performances - expect to see them in the individual competitions.

Final note - do the US team athletes travel with their own hair team? They were all professionally coiffed and colored.

Well, they are sponsored by Proctor & Gamble, makers of Pantene Pro V...

And the truth is, they are desperate for some of those endorsement deals the women's team always seem to get. In the past the members of the men's team have always been overlooked when it comes to endorsement contracts. However, this year, thanks to this beach selfie of the team that went viral...

The men's team is getting more media attention than ever, so they want to look their very best in hopes of attracting those elusive, yet lucrative endorsement contracts.

Sam Mikulak has an idea of how to boost the profile of his gymnastics team in Rio

U.S. Male Gymnasts Want to Be Objectified
Even when they medal, they stand in the shadow of female gymnasts. Might the answer be disrobing?

By LOUISE RADNOFSKY and BEN COHEN
Wall Street Journal

... the men’s team has been brainstorming ways to market their sport better. They would like to be objectified.

“Maybe compete with our shirts off,” said U.S. star Sam Mikulak, the four-time, reigning all-around national champion. “People make fun of us for wearing tights. But if they saw how yoked we are maybe that would make a difference.”...

Because his first day of competition was Saturday, America’s Mikulak went to bed early during Friday’s opening ceremonies, which meant he woke up the next morning to the night’s most unexpected excitement: a Tongan taekwondoist named Pita Taufatofua carrying his country’s flag wearing a lot of oil and not a lot else.

“I’m sorry I missed it,” said Mikulak. “If he’s representing, more power to him.”

Jake Dalton, the 2013 world silver medalist on the floor exercise, says there’s real value in the U.S. men showing off how ripped they are. It helps the obscure sport of men’s gymnastics appeal to body obsessives in the broader fitness industry who look at them as inspiration.

“We have great physiques,” Dalton said. “Incredible physiques.”

But being ridiculously fit hasn’t won them much attention. Danell Levya, the individual all-around bronze medalist in London, says there is one reliable way they can be as popular as the U.S. women: winning.

America’s female gymnasts “should be popular—and even more popular,” he said. “It’s one of the few events in this country where women do get the amount of credit they deserve.”

I gotta say, I'm quite proud of our "Hometown Hero" Lilly King, Not only did she bring home the gold, but her outspoken disapproval of Russian rival Yulia Efimova's previous record for doping (she's been banned twice already), has gained her world wide attention as the "Face Of Anti-Doping"...

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

I came to think of one of Mark Twain's witticisms (well, I think it was MT):

"- There are three kinds of lies: white lies, ordinary black lies...and statistics!"

Or - you can prove anything with statistics...
