CHERRY (2021)

So where to start with this? Some facts - it's a Russo Brothers movie; it stars Tom Holland & Ciara Bravo; it is about a boy who falls in love with a girl; goes to war; comes back but suffers PTSD and spirals downwards into crime & drugs.

There is apparently a split in opinion between those who found it slow and boring (it has a running time of 2hrs 22mins) and those who loved it, I am in the latter group. Yes at times it's slow, and at times it is very bleak and soul destroying but I think I will have this movie in my head for the next few days.

Tom Holland may be known just for having a cute ass in a tight fitting costume (understandably so!) but in this he is given a really strong role and is superb. Powerful stuff. The original music score from Henry Jackman is gorgeous too.

England 2023 -- OPERATION FORTUNE

In the film, super spy Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) must track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology wielded by billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds (Hugh Grant). Reluctantly teamed with some of the world's best operatives (Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone), Fortune and his crew recruit Hollywood's biggest movie star Danny Francesco (Josh Hartnett) to help them on their globe-trotting undercover mission to save the world. — IMDb

If you want to have a nice movie evening, this is a MUST SEE! Cool lines, great action: in one word: watch it (that have been 2 words ;) ) Very recommended!

IDLE HANDS (1999)

Slacker Anton Tobias wakes up one Halloween morning to discover that both of his parents have been turned into two headless Halloween decorations. After speaking to his equally irresponsible friends, Mick and Pnub, he discovers that his right hand has a blood-thirsty mind of its own and is hell-bent on wreaking havoc whether he likes it or not.

A comedy/horror - stars Devon Sawa so there's something to look at even if you don't find it funny. A good way to spend a wet Sunday afternoon

POLTERGEIST (1982)

Following on from this afternoons old horror/comedy I got around to a re-watch of this old classic - helped by it being available in a full HD remastered version. Okay so the special effects look a little dated but it's still a good watch.

COPSHOP ((2021)

On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist (Frank Grillo) devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station - but when the hitman (Gerard Butler) turns up an unsuspecting rookie cop (Alexis Louder) finds herself caught in the crosshairs.

Excellent stuff, a great plot, great script with many a twist and WTF moments hence no trailer - better to watch this one without seeing spoilers!

The 3 main leads are all on top form, Alexis Louder is really good and steals every scene she's in! Plenty of action, and some dark comedy in a 80's popcorn/pulp fiction B-movie style.... cheesy yes - but lots and lots of fun. Highly entertaining.

RIVER RUNS RED an American film from 2018

When the son of a successful judge (Taye Diggs) is killed by two police officers (Luke Hemsworth/Gianni Capaldi) and the system sets them free, a hardened veteran detective (John Cusack) finds some incriminating files on the officers and the judge teams up with another mourning father (George Lopez) to take the law into his own hands. (IMDb)

And yes it is a revenge thriller, perhaps number 10.000 - but I don't understand the IMDb-voting number 4,4. From this reason here one of the voices against this vote:
I watched this movie AFTER George Floyd was killed in living color, (No pun intended) Everyone panned it, called it AWFUL, do you all STILL think that?! I am black I have 3 sons, I KNOW what happens to to OUR sons!! Now so do you so called experts!

For me it was a very tragic film and the story of it I can read very often in our papers (and these stories are true!). Try to watch it with open eyes.

AMERICAN ASSASSIN (2017)

When Cold War veteran Stan Hurley takes CIA black ops recruit Mitch Rapp under his wing, they receive an assignment to investigate a wave of random attacks on both military and civilian targets. After discovering a pattern of violence, Hurley and Rapp join forces to stop a mysterious operative who wants to start a global war.

It stars Dylan O'Brien as Rapp and Michael Keaton as Hurley so sounded promising - what it ends up being is yet another "CIA team versus terrorist cell" movie. It's okay, not the worst of it's kind - but not the best either. Does Hollywood think Mitch Rapp will be the next Jason Bourne? I think that is their plan.....and it looks like there will be a sequel

THE GREAT BATTLE (2018)

Korea, 645 AD. Emperor Taizong invades Goguryeo with his massive Tang army. He has had a few victories and after defeating a major attack by the Goguryeon army he besieges Ansi. The odds are massively stacked in Taizong's favour: opposing his 200,000-strong army is a mere 5,000 force at Ansi. It is lead by Yang Manchun, a man regarded as a traitor by the Goguryeon leader.

Like many Korean movies it has a long running time. This one is 2hr 16mins but apart from near the end where it could have done with a bit of editing it zipped along at a fair pace and the many action scenes are filmed very well. Enjoyable.
This film we have watched today. Once more thank you Slimjim for this clue. It was long - yes - but nonetheless great. Great battle scenes and masterly choreographed duels.

BEHIND ENEMY LINES (2001)

A Navy pilot (Owen Wilson) is shot down over war-torn Bosnia, and struggles to survive the relentless pursuit of a ruthless secret police enforcer, a deadly tracker, and countless hostile troops. With time running out, the injured pilot's commanding officer (Gene Hackman) goes against orders to carry out a desperate rescue mission..... so I think you can guess how this will look and how it will end.

I came across this as it was one of those "More Like This" on the IMDB site when I was looking at some other film and thought I'd give it a go mainly to see Owen Wilson in a purely dramatic role, instead of his usual wise-cracking characters he gets to play, having Gene Hackman in it is usually no bad thing either. It was okay.

LINOLEUM (2023)

It got under my skin so much yesterday that I have just watched it again and been blown away as much as I was last night and ended up gob-smacked with tears running down my face again. It's a beautiful tender emotional movie, and it sure is quirky offbeat surreal too - think Wes Anderson teaming up with Tim Burton and the writers of Donnie Darko and The Butterfly Effect.

It is one of those movies that is difficult to talk about without giving huge spoilers away. The Im.db site says "When the host of a failing children's science show tries to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut by building a rocket ship in his garage, a series of bizarre events occur that cause him to question his own reality." It starts with a slow pace and disjointed nature but stick with it.

The main cast are Jim Gaffigan; Rhea Seehorn; Katelyn Nacon; Gabriel Rush; Tony Shalhoub and Roger Hendricks Simon and they are all great but Gaffigan is the standout. The cinematography is complimented by a beautifully atmospheric soundtrack.

6 DAYS (2017)

I needed something light frivolous and forgettable after Linoleum so went for this....

In April 1980, armed gunmen stormed the Iranian Embassy in Princes Gate, London and took all inside hostage. Over the next six days a tense standoff took place, all the while a group of highly trained soldiers from the SAS were preparing to raid the building, as the worlds press looked on.

A strong enough cast, including Mark Strong; Jamie Bell; Abbie Cornish & Martin Shaw. It was okay but at times it comes across more like a re-construction than a movie.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTAMANIA (2023)

The im.db site says -- Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne are dragged into the Quantum Realm, along with Hope's parents and Scott's daughter Cassie. Together they must find a way to escape, but what secrets is Hope's mother hiding? And who is the mysterious Kang?

Well who cares? Not me, I gave up on this after about 35 minutes (and I think I did well to stick with it that far). Some dreadful dialogue from some one-dimensional characters. It looks like they are saying "Look at what we can do with CGI these days - Aren't the visuals amazing?" but like SMURFS GO SWIMMING and the equally awful ETERNALS they forgot the basics of plot, script etc.

I heard that when asked about the movie Michael Douglas said the best way to watch it was on magic mushrooms!

When the MCU got to ENDGAME then that maybe should have been the hint and end it there. Much of the stuff they are churning out now has lost the magic imho. Here's hoping the upcoming GOTG 3 is a return to form. Fingers crossed for good stuff from Groot ; Rocket & Drax🙏

MACHINE GUN PREACHER (2011)... no trailer due to age of actors

Machine Gun Preacher tells the true story of Sam Childers, a former criminal; low-life drug-dealer & addict who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds his unexpected calling as the saviour of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children in war-torn Sudan.

It's an old Gerard Butler movie (he plays Sam) and athough he's okay in it, as is Michelle Monaghan & Michael Shannon the movie is a bit of a mess. It tries to be an uplifting & heartwarming story and at the same time an action movie and they don't quite manage to blend the two well enough. Still worth a watch though.

The Whale (2022)

I knew going in it was a sad movie but man I was not ready, it destroyed me. 😢 What a movie!!!

Some have criticised the screenplay as melodramatic!? I didn't find this to be the case. I found it largely authentic, tragic, and full of intrigue that compounds as more information is revealed.

MONSTERS OF MAN (2020)

A robotics company teams up with a corrupt CIA agent undergoing an illegal, unsanctioned military operation. Dropping four prototype robots into a suspected drug manufacturing camp in the Golden triangle that no one will miss. The mission is to prove the robotics company is worthy of winning a lucrative military contract. Six doctors on a good cause witness the brutal slaughter of an innocent village and are forced into a deadly game of cat and mouse as they become the new targets. (Imdb)

Awful. It maybe could have been a good film in these post-teminator times but some of the violence was horrible and brutal ( maybe they thought they were doing it in that stylish way that Sth Korean movies do, imho they were wrong - some of this was just nasty) and the "actors" playing the doctors were just terrible, the 10yr old playing a villager was a far better than them. I would have been happy if the robots had killed all of them in the first 10 minutes. Plot seemed to be humans run and hide here, robots chase and shoot some of them, humans run and hide there, robots chase them and shoot some of them and repeat ..... oh but there's an ex-Navy Seal living in the village so that's handy if you are attacked by killer robots. It's 2hrs 11 mins long - almost certainly too long. The ending? Well I never got that far but my guess is the Navy Seal destroys the robots and the final scene would be the corrupt CIA guy being arrested and put in handcuffs.
