Coming out to my parents was messy and only happened last year.

I was out of it on a very strange drug, MXE, and was on complete auto-pilot. They were about to confront me for being in such a state when I said something like "You don't even know I'm gay".

This changed the situation completely and they sat me down and it got a bit emotional. They said they had suspicions. I had a go at my Dad for making homophobic remarks throughout the years, making it harder for me to come out.

I'm glad it happened as I probably still wouldn't have faced up to telling them, but it was very odd.

I was twenty-one, extremely depressed and attempted suicide, by overdosing on chloral-hydrate. My best friend found me, rushed me to the er and the doctor at hospital outed me to my parents. Looking back, I should have sued him on grounds of breach of patient confidentiality. I really wish I had. He was a homophobic asshole! That was 30 years ago...
Oh, and my ultra-conservative, uber-religious parents did not take the news well...

For me, I think coming out isn't just a process that happens once, it's a lifelong process. With every new friend I make, it's the same process all over again. I'm getting quite good at it, but there are still some friends out there who I'm still afraid to tell, though I can't imagine why.. if they don't accept something as normal as homosexuality, then they're probably not worthy of my friendship. To my parents, the process was really awful.. essentially they found out through a friend and confronted me about it and they were certainly not happy about it and sulked for a week, but the worst is over and it's all good now. My sister knew all along anyway.. perhaps my obsession with the Spice Girls and playing with her barbie dolls at a young age was a giveaway..

At the time I came out, I was 14, my mother already knew I was dating my best friend and my friends/brothers didn't care.
so it was easy, no drama.

Waiting for the right one or extreme shyness are actually possible, if I were straight I would be in that situation...
But there's a little detail that must not be underestimated: "I think". Some things just happen in a certain way and there's nothing and no one to blame for that... Why should it be your fault? You just came out to him, so that's not it; being too much around him? Check the paragraph below, I didn't spell that out, but between those problems and our friendship you could have found me around my best friend anytime I could, but it worked out fine... Experimenting with each other? It's not like you forced him to, and he also had a life before college, if he wanted to he could have had girls before you two even met...

Few years ago I was having some depressive problems, my best friend was basically the only one keeping up with me, I actually worried about him, having to bear my problems instead of having fun, getting a girlfriend and that kind of stuff... He kept working with me on my depression for years and still got girlfriends....

You're right. Realistically, I think he would be too shy to try to get a girlfriend even if I had never come out to him. Hopefully, that changes in the future. The experimenting was actually something he sort of initiated, although it was definitely upon mutual agreement. I hope you've gotten rid of those depressive problems, and I am glad that your friend was able to still get girls while helping you through it. I feel like with my friend, there is going to be some tension arise when I start dating (which might be soon), and I just don't know what that will look like.

I came out when I was home on leave from the military. I ran into someone I had known for several years at a gay bar, neither one of us new the other was gay. We became lovers and the relationship lastest for 12 years. It was at the same time I told my parents I was gay, of course the military never knew, I am a Vietnam veteran.
