I got a new laptop today and it came with windows 8...

My God, is it complete and utter shit!!!

I plugged a portable hard drive with some movies to check the video and it took me 20 min. just to find the drive on the computer. It is the most confusing and unfriendly system I've ever seen. I may just wipe it and install Windows 7 instead...:(

I haven't tried it myself, but from what I have heard from other people is that its confusing at first, but once you get used to it its pretty good.

My desktop died recently. I wanted to be up and going right away, so I bought one off the shelf at Costco. All they had was HP with windows 8.
I don't hate it quite enough to drag the whole thing back to Costco, but almost.

I've been meaning to go to the nearby MicroCenter store to try out a Win8 device and see what the OS is like. I really have no opinion of it now. Since I'm unfamiliar with it and at the same time, I'm incredibly happy with Windows 7 on my laptop, I'm not planning to upgrade until the next time I get a new computer.

I tried the pre release, and it is terrible. no option to close anything, and getting to menu's drove me nuts.

I hope it is MS's downfall and they will realise their mistakes

A contrary view:

I use Win8 on my desktop (touchscreen) and laptop (no touchscreen). It took me a few days to wrap my mind around the user-interface changes. I think Microsoft is doing what it needs to do as part of a larger plan to vertically integrate its products and services. The shift will be painful for some users, but after becoming familiar with it, I think Win8 is pretty darn good -- no Blue Screens of Death, no hardware compatibility problems, super-fast startup, etc. Plus, integration of my two Win8 devices and my Windows Phone 8 is pretty fluid. My files are in sync across all devices via SkyDrive and even things like music playlists keep synced.

Win8 is a love-it-or-hate-it release. I happen to love it, but my "love" for daily use of the OS is dependent on the machine. On my laptop, it's a bit frustrating at times. On my desktop, where I can just touch the screen, it's almost orgasmically good.

I'd say ... try it. Suspend judgment until after you've used it for a few weeks. If you don't like it, you can always downgrade to Win7 or go with Linux.

I love:heart: Windows 8, Had it installed on my Macbook Pro for nearly 2 months now, Everyone is running smooth, at first it was confusing with the new Metro Start up Menu, but eventually i got used to it, as many people have complained that they don't like the New start screen menu when they log in to Windows, and they wished they are able to automatically start up in Desktop Mode as soon as you log in, I have a solution that solves this and it also brings back the classic Start Button in Desktop Mode as well

Here it is, It's called "Classic Shell" a free software that has a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but was later removed. It has a customizable Start menu and Start button for Windows 7 and Windows 8, it adds a toolbar for Windows Explorer and supports a variety of smaller features. Here is a list of all the features available > http://refhide.com/?http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/features.html

& To setup so that it will automatically boot into Desktop Mode, That solution is available here > http://refhide.com/?http://www.askvg.com/how-to-skip-metro-start-screen-and-boot-directly-into-desktop-in-windows-8/

So that's it, on how to bypass Microsoft's Metro Start screen Menu when logging to Windows and into Desktop Mode instead and to Bring back the Classic Start Button, I hope all the information above helps :big hug:

& Here is screen cap of my Windows 8 Pro in Desktop Mode with the Start Button :)

windows 8 is kind of cool--but get rid of the metro interface and I really don't see much difference in it or 7-more tweaks and stuff--but I plan on buying me a touch screen after the holidays --it does take some gettingused to I will admit but once you do it runs pretty smooth

Hi c750dt:heart: Yes there is a way to get the Aero feature back which does require hacking into the registry which i tried it and it didn't look very good :( ( as in it the glass interface was there but when you try to move the window it becomes very blurry/buggy) , There are softwares that bring Aero as well but the same problem occurs again, Hopefully Microsoft will add this feature again in the near future  & thanks, I'm glad & :) that you like my PC's Specifications my friend.

Thank you so very much! I'll try it.

I've been telling all the collage students at work that if they want to be millionaires by age 25 what they need to do is develop an app that locks out the Metro mode on Windows 8...:p

Aww that's alright brmstn69:heart: you're always welcome anytime my friend :big hug: & yes i know that you will try this software, regarding about it, I forgot to mention this that when you setup the automic skip Metro mode, you might see the Start Screen for a few secs before it takes you to the Desktop mode, the reason why this software does that is because there is some limitation which i think it's got to do with the Operating System but the method Skip Metro 100% works, & i hear that you been telling all your college students at work if they want to be millionaires at 25 they should creating an app that locks this Metro mode out? Cool :) , hmm maybe they did create this app i posted on your thread:thinking: , but they didn't want to tell you cause they wanted to give this to you as a surprise.

From what I'm hearing from the tech people, they will not be installing it on
work environments, unless they absolutely have to when buying new equipment. From all the people I know, it's a disaster.
One thing they did was change it drastically so you are force to buy a microsoft phone and microsoft pad.

One of the most intelligent things I've heard said of Windows 8 is that it fails the "if it didn't exist" test. Why, because if it didn't exist, no one would miss it.

Sure, people will tolerate it because most people are under the illusion they have no alternative to Windows. But what problem does it solve? What does it give us that we didn't have before? If Microsoft cancelled it in the morning, who would care?

Just like Windows ME and Windows Vista, millions of coppies will be sold, but I doubt history will remember it fondly.

Normally when a new version of Windows is released I wait at least 3-6 months for bugs to be ironed out before buying or installing it.

W7 was a big improvement over Vista and is still quite new so I feel under no pressure to upgrade and am quite happy with W7. Maybe in a year..

I've been using Windows 8 for a few months already (and another few weeks of testing it in various beta phases) and it is far from disaster.
Mostly people focus on new Metro style and Start screen as being counter-productive and I can agree to some extent - it runs wonderful on a tablet but is bothersome on a laptop or PC. Still, if you haven't used Start menu too often and had workflow using JumpLists and apps pinned to taskbar than you have nothing to worry about.
And let's not forget about other pros of this system - it's got refreshed kernel, it hibernates and resumes within seconds (really impressive!) and has other improvements.

You shouldn't compare to Vista or ME. ME crashed quite often but it's nothing special as it was still DOS-based (9x-kernel based) and Vista before SP1 run awfully slow and had very irritating UAC. I believe removing Start menu from Windows 8 was a mistake but the system introduces new functionality and if you didn't like Vista you might not like Windows 8, but it's much more likeable than you might think.

It may have a new kernel, but it's still far too big of a monstrosity for tablet use. Why is there no 16GB version of the Microsoft Surface? Simple, if you made such a thing there would only be room for the OS! You need about 14GB just for the system stuff, so even a 32GB surface only gives you about 18GB of usable space - by comparison, my 16GB iPad has almost 14GB of usable space. Compare the footprint of Windows 8 to any Linux distro and you see a similar story - Microsoft have been counting on computers continuing to get faster with more RAM and more storage. They have not bothered with efficiency because, well, you just wait a year and the PC market gives you the extra umph you need! The problem is that with tablets that totally breaks down, and Windows is shown up for the inefficient mess that it really is.

In many ways tablets are like computers from a decade ago. That's why Windows 8 is so horribly sluggish and over-sized on a tablet, while iOS is a joy. It's a small lean powerful OS. It has the same kernel and many of the came core libraries as OS X so developers can use many of the same tools, but it is designed around a small footprint in terms of RAM, storage, and CPU.

Don't get me started on the insane idea that a finger and a mouse pointer are the same thing, and that it is possible to design a single interface that is ideal for both - it is not. Windows 8 is a flawed OS built around a flawed idea.

It will be tolerated but not loved. When ever I see people posting in it's defence there are always so many caveats that I'm always reminded of the phrase "damning with faint praise".
