Hey, in the last few days I've had one online friend try, and thank God fail to kill himself, and another talking about it, so I thought it was time to bump up this thread again.

Hi richym.

How old are they?

In the link in my above post there are a number of links which may be helpful.

In particular I'd like to draw your attention to the one for an all-ages forum/safe discussion place named Empty Closets which has a lot of 'been there' members and a number of competent volunteer advisers & health care professionals.

Your friends could use an expanded support group ASAP.

Please keep us posted.

Hi Electric XII,
Thanks for ur concern mate. The one who tried and failed is 20. He seems to have come through ok and be ready to move on with life, but the next step is to try and get his some sort of councelling.
The other is 19, and is going through a rough time since Christmas, and I haven't got to have a good chat with him yet about where he is at with things, though he seems certain he won't kill himself, which is always a good thing.
I will continue to be there, to listen to them, and encourage them to get help and support.
Thanks again for your concern.

Right then. +1 on doing a persistent follow up. Since they old enough to come here, then perhaps they could do so in addition to checking out Empty Closets?

There's also this sub-forum on another adult gay site:

Coming Out, Relationships & Bisex Talk

The overall aim would be plug these young men into as many people as possible to find a few who'll click with each of them well thus best insuring they'll always find an ear when they need one.

Another strategy for combating depression is to help out others via volunteer work in one's local community. Investing in the well-being of someone else makes one feel needed while enhancing one's sense of self-worth/bolstering one's will to live.

For example: since I like fiddling with older computers I'd refurbish PCs for use by underprivileged kids or teach an elderly person how to use the Internet to reach out to old friends.

Being a big brother or mentor to a troubled younger teen is an example of another option.

Volunteerism also has the advantage of networking with good-hearted people which could flush out a true boyfriend. :)

The main thing is to get these young guys so engaged in others that they won't have time to dwell upon that which depresses them most.

Years & years ago I became suicidal. Thankfully I just don't care about much of anything anymore.

I called one of those hotlines. I was told to stay on the line & someone would be with me shortly. I was placed on HOLD for 2 1/2 hours. The number at that time was 800-638-Help. This Number NO LONGER exists. They had only 1 person manning the phones. I was so pissed off by the time the 'helper' answerred that I bitched him out & promised an end to the hotline crap. I received 2 'special' visits in the next week. A year later the hotline was gone.

I still suffer from some strong depression. Have been told I need meds (which I can't afford). Should probably be seeing someone about it---BUT like I said above, I simply just don't seem to CARE about much anymore. & Nothing seems to be That Bothersome to me now.

But thanks for the post. For some that Choose to read it all the way thru; it will be helpful.

Hi Ainsey.

If one can't live for oneself then try living for someone else. Have you tried helping & teaching other people to do things which they have trouble doing for themselves?

Feeling needed feels good.

My depression always dealt with the thought no one cared about me. If anyone is reading this late at night-- feeling the same way--- People do care and love you. The feelings you feel are false. Don't do anything you'll regret.

I still get depressed once in awhile, but it has never reached a dangerous point it had a few times before.

'Same here.

And a good way to have someone care about one is for one to proactively interact with and care for someone else.

A person is easier to care about if their existence is known and appreciated.

Of course. It's a topic I think people kind of brush off. It needs to be discussed.
